I believe a clarification is in order. Both sides of a Questar's meniscus are coated with magnesium fluoride or multi-coated with a combination of other substances to reduce unwanted reflections off the surfaces of the glass and thus enhance light transmission through most of the meniscus. In addition, a relatively small area at the center of one surface of the meniscus is also coated with aluminum or silver to create a mirrored spot (the secondary). On earlier Questars, like the cutaway model, the secondary mirror was located on the outer surface of the meniscus. On later Questars, it's deposited on the inner surface of the meniscus, and an opaque plastic disk is the centered on the outer surface. The mirrored spot, whether on the inside or outside surface of the meniscus, forms what is also known as the central obstruction.

And it has been at Cernan for 22 years? Boy, time flies. Seems like yesterday that I saw it at Adler.

I'm pretty sure it was there when I started in 1990.

When I first saw that scope at the Cernan I thought, "Who would do such a thing to a telescope?" It is amazing that Questar has been in business now for over 60 years producing and selling these little scopes every week and making money at it. They have to produce hundreds a year and there must be thousands out there but you don't see them. Even if they only produce 100 a year, 2 a week which is not much to keep a business with employees going, means there should be over 6,000 Questars in circulation!

Mark

Most of Questar's scopes are destined for industrial and government use. The production of instruments for backyard astronomy is only a sideline.

I've recently joined this forum and just came across this year-old thread as I work my way through the old Questar posts. I've just ordered the 50th Anniversary model, and now I can see where the money goes. Holy Cow! Thanks for posting the pics; they are brilliant and unique.

Glad to hear you like the pics. I espeically like the one that has the S&T add it was in. I made sure to place it at the exact same angle as in the add.
