This is my second Jupiter observation made through the 8" this year. A couple nights prior my thermal exhaust experiemnting killed a really nice night with excessive flaring and ultimately dew. The next ob I was treated to a a very fair view, maybe 6/10 seeing with Europa transiting the disk along with its shadow. This was a study in contrasts that was enlightening. We see the little spot by BA often imaged with near galillean moonshadow contrast exagerration but this is not the case to the eye. Indeed it took a hefty 303x to make it pop and this wasnt excessive. What 303x did was resolve the poin t as a specific disc with surface area and tone. But boy was it a sensitive catch. Everything else was the usual 200x-240x which suits fine for the larger features that show easier with their generous spacial area.
The transit of europa was a beautiful thing as the disc resolved nicely in this seeing and the shadow a perfect inverted value to play off the moon itself. Because Jupiter is so close at 48" the moon too, though Jupiters smallest of the four shown distinctly with specific surface area that made the whole procession a delicate but fine thing that flattered the resolution capabilities of the scope.
After last years horrendous November where the entire month was a shut out of 3-4/10 seeing I was giddy about 6/10 seeing. It was like cosmic lotto. Hardly the best view the scopes ever had but profitable and again beautiful . Hashing out the nodules, and gaps and doo dads in the belts was rewarding pursuit.

You have done an excellent job with faithful reproduction of the low contrast details, something I find hard to capture, they tend to become more bold than they really are in my drawings. Really nice work.

Pete! That's sweet, man! You even captured the softer light spots along the NEB northern border. The two toned GRS, color in BA (which is exceedingly difficult for me.)
And the monolith! LOL Well done, my friend.

Pete,
I think I like this one the best for how busy it is with features to look at and I'm a sucker for a moon shadow and moon transit. Beautiful color too.

Nice work, Pete. We saw many of the same features on this side of Jupiter. Lucky you with a transit, too. Well rendered.

Pete, the coloration is as realistic as I've seen in a sketch. Your detail renderings are quite good for a 6/10 evening. I have to ask, what medium did you use? The finished product has a washed and graceful appearance to it, much as I see Jupiter in the eyepiece. Very watercolor-like. Beautiful.

Thanks folks. It is nice to have feedback on something that's such a solitary pursuit. The moon transit was great timing but nailing that subarctic second spot next to the GRS was perhaps the most challenging thing.
The medium was dry pastel pencil as the oil pastels were often too permanent and refused rework due to pigmentation staining of paper. The paper was simple copier paper which is too ...well thin...but the template was on it I caved in and used it. Veloure paper is the best but I have to have templates printed up on it and its a bother I haven't yet taken on.
It is good to read words of support again thank you.

Thanks for the explanation of your drawing technique, Pete. I like it on the printer paper. It has a smooth and "distant" accuracy to it.

Hi Pete,
That's a really fine sketch and you recorded a lot of nice detail.
I haven't tried dry pastel pencils but look into them.
I have done some sketches in using color pencils:

but it is easier to get a smoother look using regular lead pencils:

Hi Eric,
Apparently paper difference can make a big difference and velour paper in particular ir proving very satisfactory. I the case of the drawing above I burnished dry pastel into copier paper so it helped to get a fair gradient and smoothness in the process, though I will agree graphite is easier to smooth out. I love the dry pastels though. What DOES bother the hell out of me is the lack of contrast in the drawing and I really played around with it. Im still working out the lighting. The zones should be near white not beige. It bothers me a lot. Its an ok attempt though,,, its just still being tweaked.
Thank you for the comments and compliments.
Pete

Pete, great capture of Europa and the planet's colors. Just how I've seen them (except for the GRS - 'nuff said!)

Ya, Pete, the more I look at this one, the more I realize you nailed the festoons and oval BA. Your belts are a bit more red than I see them.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the information. How do you burnished dry pastel into copier paper?
Also did you have your mirror refigured or is it a new mirror?
Best,
Eric
