iOptron SmartEQ Pro Mount w/ Which Scope...
      #5551550 - 12/03/12 06:16 AM

After considerable research, I have arrived at the conclusion that the following package will fit my needs best:

- An iOptron SmartEQ Pro mount (payload capacity of 11 lbs.)
- One of the following three small refractors:
1) William Optics ZenithStar 71 ED, f/5.9, 6 lbs.
2) Astro-Tech AT72ED, f/6, 5 lbs.
3) Stellarvue SV 70ED, f/6, 4.75 lbs.

Package will be used for casual observing, and wide-field AP with a Canon DSLR. Any opinions on which scope of the three would perform best? Any advice is appreciated!

I can't really comment on the choice of scope but the SmartEQ does handle my TV-85 which weighs closer to 10 lbs but I had to use a 4 lb counterweight because the standard 2 lb counterweight will only balance an 8 lb payload.

Brian,

Did you do AP with it?

George

I haven't done AP using the TV85 George but I have mounted my Olympus OM-D and 150mm f/2 (EFL 300mm) which produced the image below of Orion's sword and M42. I was able to take 60 second unguided shots with this setup and stack in Nebulosity. I simply did a polar alignment using the optional polar scope reticle and then turned on the drive! I have a 70mm Pronto and 0.8 reducer/flattener that I plan to try for AP on this mount.

George, here's a test image taken off a SmartEQ Pro,

Test Shot of IC1396 w/60mm Borg by Astronewb2011, on Flickr

Used a 60ED Borg with a .7 reducer, 60 and 120 second exposures under a bright moon with a Nikon D5100. Guided with a 50mm/SSAG. Hope the info helps.

Cheers,

Paul

The AT72ED is a "honey" of a small scope. The back is rotatable so should work fine for AP too.

And, Welcome to Cloudy Night's Forums!

Brian and Paul,

Looks really encouraging! I have asked my wife to put the Pro on the Christmas list along with the SV70.

Best,

George

George,

Did you end up getting it? Paul, I was thinking about an iEQ Pro as a portable mount for traveling... Can you estimate the total weight you're putting on it with your rig? Great picture!

Chris

Hi Chris,

I did get it. But I need to spend more time with it as my gotos were way off. I did slap just a DSLR on it and at 85 mm easily got 4 min subs with good tracking. I need to get this sorted out befor trying autoguiding.

Best,

George
