8 Planets new
      #5552462 - 12/03/12 05:29 PM Attachment (37 downloads)

The eight major planets of the solar system are seen in this composite image.

Not counting the Earth. And depending on whether you believe Pluto should be counted as a major planet.

Click on the link for a larger image with more information.

These images were shot over the last year or so. Jupiter is at opposition right now, so it's a good time to go out and try to get some shots of it.

These were all shot with a Canon T2i (550D) with either a Celestron C11 Edge or a 130mm triplet apochromatic refractor.

They are shown in order of relative size when they were taken.

Jerry

Really nice image with perspective, something that's missing in a lot of images of this type. Good work, Jerry!!

David

Hey Jerry, with Jupiter coming to opposition I guess we're all going to have to try and get lucky even if our wives would beg to differ !

Cheers,
Ed

Excellent work Jerry!

Question about Pluto. Since Pluto is so faint an object, did you use Magic Lantern to override the fps?

Brent

P.S. Pluto in my heart is still a planet.
At NRAO, Green Bank, WV, there is a model scale of the solar system, with the Sun placed at the Visitor Center. The GBT is ~ 1 mile away, and as the tour bus takes you out to the GBT, each planet has a station along the way, with a flag. Pluto is at the base of the GBT, and it's flag now flies at half-mast.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate them!

Brent, the Pluto image was taken from a single 5 minute exposure. Pluto is so faint it is essentially a deep-sky object!

Jerry

Jerry,

That was my assumption, but I thought that maybe you
had tried the .2fps ML override, and got enough data
in the 5 second video frames to eek out Pluto.

Brent

Hi Brent,

I don't think you could record a 14th magnitude object with exposures that short...
