Io Transit near opposition
      #5553738 - 12/04/12 10:49 AM Attachment (62 downloads)

I got out 4 of 5 nights in a row for average conditions. I'm working of a HUGE backlog, but this one was worthy of posting.

Mike

Hi Mike.

Thanks for posting.

In fact there is a big "debate" on the Solar System and Lunar observing post regarding reports of seeing Io as a "football" and your image shows this beautifully.

I had reported seeing albedo features on Io visually a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that it gave Io the look of a tiny yellowish pearl.

Someone else that may have been somewhat skeptcial later saw (to his admitted surprise) the exact same effect using a smaller scope.

And someone else reported seeing Io as looking a bit stretched out using an even smaller scope and the scope itself was small enough that the feat seemed to some unlikley.

But your image shows perfectly what I reported, and in that thread, I have used it as evidence that suggest that even in a small aperture, diffraction of this bright central band displayed in your picture could explain how someone with a very small scope could actually see Io as being slighly out of round.

So, linked to your picture and greatly appreciate you posting it.

I constantly refer to the previous nights images afer a session to confirm my observations, and someone else had posted a similar picture showing the north and south limbs as being lower in contrast than the cental equitorial region, and your picture shows this oh so beautifully.

Thanks for posting. A great image and just in time for the other thread!

Io looks like it's rolling over Jupiter's cloudtops; the quality and angular relationship between Io and Jupiter make this image one of my favorites of the year. Great timing and capture skill Mike!

Hey Mike, nice job.
I don't want hijack your thread, I wasn't going to post this image... I shot it with the 10" on 11/30, the night before I shot the ISS. I just want to show that the shadow of Io has shifted sides. Wish I'd had the camera on the C14 now!

Great shot, Mike.

And I like the comparison image, Tim - very cool to see the switch.

Mike, excellent image! Io detail and shadow are very nice, it almost appears that Io was ripped from the globe with a "hole puncher" leaving behind the perfect black circle. Thanks for posting

Regards,
Steve
