What are these in this cropped SDO image?
      #5554860 - 12/04/12 11:35 PM Attachment (34 downloads)

Hi, does anyone know what (if any) the towering features on the left-hand horizon/limb of this SDO image are called (this crop and sharpening I did of one that just came in to SDO.)

Just curious, Jason H.

You mean the darkish structure? That appears to be a filament. If it is, it should be much more visible in the 304 image.

The sun looks very different in ultraviolet wavelengths like this as compared to hydrogen-alpha. Many features, such as those bright arcs are totally invisible from Earth's surface. That is why we launch these orbiting solar observatories.

Thanks Emil and Sean,

And Emil, yes I was talking about the "darkish structures". That SDO has some really fascinating stuff.

Regards, Jason W. Higley

I just found this movie on their website that really explains for me what those are by showing how they move. This SDO stuff just blows my mind.

Regards, Jason H.
