I was looking around on the internet today for several small wooden boxes to house vintage Japanese diagonals, eyepieces, etc. in. I came up with these. One of them has the same clasp as my Unitron Unihex box. I thought that some balsa wood inserts and felt my make these useful little containers.

Thanks for the info. wonder who else makes these boxes? Might make a lot of us happy not to have to make these things. If we could find some made out of Mahagony that would be fantastic.

Those are nice looking boxes. I get a lot of unfinished wooden boxes from my local Hobby Lobby to use for my classic accessories. They have weekly 40% off coupons right now.

Careful what you entrust to them!
"Craft" boxes are glued together with thin-ply - and usually equipped with flimsy, pinned hinges...

I found one yesterday at Michaels Crafts that is almost exactly the same size as the Unitron six eyepiece box. The sides are 1/4 inch thick and the joints could easily be strengthened with small brass wood screws. It was 3 bucks with brass hinges and a very nice brass clasp. Not having a box for my Unitron eyepiece set which I have just completed, I got it. I am going to polyurethane it and felt line it. Any thoughts on how to make the platform with 6 one inch holes to insert the eyepieces in? The interior dimensions are approximately 8 long by 2 1/2 wide by 1 3/4 deep (inches). BTW I was told that an original unitron box costs as much as the set of eyepieces

That would describe many of Hobby Lobby boxes. But you can reinforce them if needed. I find most of the boxes can be used as-is for the light weight accessories of classic scopes though. H-L also sells pieces of wood, various shapes and thicknesses. I got one piece, cut it to fit and drilled with 1" holes, and glued it into a box to hold some .965 eyepieces and a diagonal.

Michaels has some really nice pre-finished craft boxes that can be used for astro-accessories.

How 'crafty' are you? If not very, I could make your EP shelf for you from exact drawing. Cost of material (not much) and postage. Labor free. You can see pix of my work in the member gallery.

check out this box. Now I wonder what we could store in one of these. Slight modifications required.

When I get around to it I'm going to buy a box joint jig for my router and make some large boxes for my Unitron Mount, Legs and my Tasco 7TE from Rockler.

Wow, that is so nice Ken. I am still trying to figure out how to get the 1 inch dia holes in the "platform" of the "unitron" eyepiece box I am "making" or rather, customizing That box at Amazon is amazing Starman. It looks as nice as the ones at Wooden Wonders that cost 200 bucks.

I use a brace and wood auger bit but those are kinda Amish obsolete now, a 1" Forstner Bit with a 3/8" Shank is what you want, they go for about ten bucks. Try Rockler or some other tool place like Harbor freight or northern tools.
