Does anyone know of any reviews of the $400 EXT 90 at?
Does it have manual slow motion knobs, or is it all automated?

I believe it is like the old ETX (the Autostar ETXes, not the RA) in that regard: no slow motion controls.

Except for a really, really bad paint job on the OTA!

New or old? Could you expand on that? thanks

All the old ETX models have a smooth, high gloss, anodized finish on the OTA's. Probably the most beautiful finish I've ever seen on any telescope. From what I've read, Meade was unable to get an acceptable finish on their OTA's from their new Mexican factory. So, they switched to a dull, flat "pebble" finish that I consider to be the cheapest looking and ugliest finish I've ever seen on a telescope.
Of course, this has nothing to do with the optical quality of the new ETX scopes. I just hope that Meade still has the capability to manufacture a high quality Maksutov telescope.

I think, I am sorry to say, the bottom line on the "new" 90 is "cheaper/simpler."

Depending on your financal status cheaper/simpler may be better than more better/more unaffordabler. I will say that Meade is looking awfully thin on the low end. Actually, they are starting to look kinda thin across most of their product line. I'm glad I've got what I've got.
The new ETX-90 seems like a good opportunity for a family on a budget.

The one in the last S&T ad looked like it might be anodized. It doesn't look like the Chinese 90 Mak they were selling last year.
The mount looks to be the same design as the ETX80s. The mount combines the power panel with a single motor control PCB that uses only one microprocessor. The worms are plastic, not metal. Initial assembly faster. Service more difficult. Meade probably saves $5 per unit.

The image in the magazine was of the previous version, I believe. The current model had the power/HC panel on a fork arm and not on the base...

I would guess those guts would be pretty similar to those in an ETX80/70/60...

I would like to know and not guess as adding roller bearings to the style ETX80 I have is really rather easy. Now I just need to find someone to make a replacement worm and worm gear. I was hoping that the worm and worm gear in the 90 was a better quality.

If you don't want to guess buy one and take it a part. They are cheap.

Highly unlikely. Almost identical worm gears are used on the iOptron mini, which points to a NORINCO source. Probably something adapted from a larger military production item. Doubt they'd retool for a low volume consumer item.

The Questars have a superior finish to them... far more than any Meade... but I will agree that the anodizing on the better Meades is pretty decent.
