I managed to discover a new variable in Pisces during an ongoing photometric study of the main-belt asteroid 95 Arethusa. After most sessions that last more than 2 hours at UnderOak Observatory, images are routinely examined for undocumented variable stars and for the first time in 7 years it paid off. GSC 01208-01137, which happened to be in the same field-of-view as 95 Arethusa on 15Nov2012, was flagged as a potential variable using the variable star search utility in MPO Canopus. The general shape of the lightcurve suggested one-half of an orbital cycle for a W UMa–type eclipsing binary which in the final analysis proved to be correct. Additional light curve data (B, V and R) collected between 15Nov2012 and 23Nov2012 yielded an orbital period of 0.323729 ±0.000001 d from Fourier analysis. These data, along with supporting data captured in the ASAS-3 and NSVS databases were submitted to the International Variable Star Index (VSX) for verification. Sebastián Otero, an external consultant for AAVSO and on the VSX Team, was extremely helpful in walking me through the process necessary to submit this discovery. Final approval was acknowledged on 28Nov2012; all of the supporting data can be found here at the VSX website.

Many thanks for everyone's kind wishes. Hopefully the next discovery won't take quite as long.
