Just found out (the hard way, of course) while attempting drift alignment that it pays to loosen the connection between the mount and pier/or tripod before turning those az knobs while polar aligning. (I may have chewed the thread on one of them.)

As has been stated here numerous times, use this between the mount head and the head of the tripod. Problems over - no loosening necessary at all.

Dave's correct. Just put some milk container-like material between the mount and the 'pod. It really helps!
