Hi all
Has anyone heard about this new atlas from Charles Wood and Maurice Collins? At first I looked the page over to make sure this wasn't an April fools joke.
Here is the information page at LPOD for the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon. I mean it has to be good right with Mr. Wood's insight on lunar formations, etc. And the price looks right too, $29.95. It says it will ship December 8, 2012.
Check out the page and see if you think the atlas covers the whole lunar nearside or is it just specialized areas and the nearside is not covered? (see contents page)

It looks like it covers the entire nearside, but appears an awfully large area of coverage to each plate, meaning a small scale. I'm thinking I'll keep my original Rukl and my new Cambridge atlas and pass on this one.

Richard,
Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered my copy! I'm a sucker for a good lunar atlas. And Charles Wood is behind it? A no-brainer for us lunies. I like, too, that the atlas is spiral bound for easy use at the telescope.

I received this message from LPOD:
"Thanks for ordering our Atlas! It will be mailed to you soon, hopefully reaching US addresses within a week after Dec 12."

Hi Mike,
You're welcome. I'm glad you ordered one. You'll let us know how it stands up to scope side use.
Looks like this atlas came out Nov. 18, I wish I'd seen it before but life got in the way. I check LPOD every day except from Nov 18 - Oct 21 I was in the hospital recovering from a stroke. It will be awhile before I'm scope side but I'm working on it.
I think Mr. Wood's commentary on an atlas like this should be awesome. I remember reading his, The Modern Moon: A Personal View, along with the 2nd edition of Rukl's atlas was a great learning experience for me regarding the Moon. I highly recommend reading/using both at the same time on cloudy nights.
I look forward to some reviews when everyone starts to get this atlas.

Hi Richard,
Sorry to hear about your illness. I hope you're feeling better soon so you can get back out there to enjoy la Luna with the rest of us Lunatics!
I enjoyed reading Wood's The Modern Moon. I didn't think to read it while referring to Rukl's. That's the way to do it.
I will definitely take Wood's Atlas out for some Moon viewing ASAP and give a report here.

I received mine today. It was postmarked on the 27th and sent via media mail rate (slower delivery?)
At first glance it is a very high quality printing, thick glossy pages should stand up well to a lot of use. Definitely worth the cost and wait!
