There's an extensive collection of wonderful short videos by British Astronomers available on YouTube, collectively called the "Deep Sky Videos". The videos range from about four to ten minutes long, with the subject of each nominally being a particular Messier object, but the real focus is on exploring one or more key astro-scientific aspects of the object, e.g. the video on M30 explains that it is exemplary of the process of "core collapse" of globular clusters, and gives a succinctly accessible thumbnail explanation of how this process works. Each video also includes not just a variety of interesting images of the object, but often how professional astronomers (and some serious amateur imagers) go about studying, imaging, and gathering relevant data about the object. What this series does NOT attempt is to be a guide how to find or observe these objects visually with amateur telescopes.
There's enough surprising depth in these brief videos to be worthwhile for even quite experienced, knowledgeable amateurs, even while still being quite accessible to relative beginners.
HERE'S A SAMPLER from which you'll find links on YouTube to many more from the series:
M56
M77
M33
M30
M110
The lovely, articulate Meghan Gray of the University of Nottingham is featured on many of these videos; some guys will probably have to resist the urge to develop an instant crush on her.

I love this series, it's done by the same guy who does the periodic table of videos for Nottingham University.

Instead of starting a new thread, better to bump this one
fyi there is a dedicated website that visually catalogs all the Deep Sky Videos very nicely:
Deep Sky Videos
I especially like the video tours of the actual observatories, not often that you get them.
imo, be sure to check out Brady's (the video producer) other extensive projects along the lines of the Deep Sky ones - Periodic Videos, Numberphile, Sixy Symbols, etc. I am seriously impressed with the width, depth, and quality of subjects covered in such a short span of time, and imo it's a real show case of what quality short youtube videos (of the 'educational' sorts) can be.

The PS3 now has a YouTube app that you can get from their store. I've been watching the Deepsky and Spacerip videos on my large screens and the quality of the picture is quite good. I don't have an Xbox but I would imagine there is a similar app. No more sitting in front of the computer.
