Probably the most recognizable constellation in the winter sky, Orion contains a collection of famous and prominent deep sky objects. In this image, M42, the Great Nebula in Orion, is at the bottom of Orion's Sword (right side of image). The emission nebula, M43, is immediately to the left of M42 with the blue Running Man reflection nebula left of M43. Extending below Orion's belt (towards the right) is a red hydrogen nebula (IC 434) which has dark dust blocking its light to form the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33). Below Orion's belt is the peach colored emission nebula known as the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024). At the top right is the blue Witch Head Nebula (IC 2118), which shines by reflecting light from nearby Rigel. The large red semicircle on the bottom of the image is the faint emission nebula Barnard's Loop. The red nebula at the far left forming Orion's head is the Lambda Orionis Ring (Sh2-264):

This is my first image where I successfully blended RGB and Ha data and it turned out to be quite a learning experience. The image is a 50mm widefield image using an Olympus f/1.8 50mm prime lens at f/4, Baader modified Canon 450D piggybacked on my C-8 and Schaefer mount. The image is made from stacks of 147 x 3 minute RGB subs (7 1/3 hours) and 18 x 10 minute Ha subs (3 hours) using an Astronomik 6nm Ha clip filter. Guiding was with an ONAG On-axis Guider, Lodestar autoguider, and Phd Guiding.
Thanks for looking!

Wonderful image Scott! I am assuming you are using an adapter for the Olympus to Canon body? How did you focus?

Totally groovy shot Scott!! Cr69 really pops (one of my favorites), and you almost snuck all of the Witch's Head in the frame too. You maintained excellent color balance with the Ha blend too.. Very nice work, thanks for sharing.

Awesome image Scott. Makes me wish I had a decent 50mm. Unfortuantely I have only the kit lens. Great choice for this time of the year.

That's an amazing shot Scott! So what do you think of the ONAG? It seems to play very well with a DSLR!

Thank you so much everybody for your very kind comments. I hadn't had much success with widefields, as I was trying to use some of old Olympus zoom lenses. They worked great in the film days, but they just don't have the optical quality that digital imaging requires. I can't tell you how many times I overlooked the old Olympus Zuiko 50mm without thinking of its potential for AP. Now I have a whole new list of fields to image!
@Pete - yes, I used the Fotodiox adapter. For focusing, I used Images Plus' focusing (where it snaps a sub every few seconds). I focused at f/1.8 (where the lens has less depth of field) and then stopped it down to f/4 when imaging. This helped to ensure sharp focus (increased depth of field). It was a bit tricky to focus because there's no fine adjustment on the lens, and I didn't have anything to adapt a Robofocus or other fine focuser to the lens. Focusing the Ha was even more fun - a 6nm filter doesn't make for a very bright image.
@Gary - you forced me to learn something today. I didn't even realize that there was a cluster at Orion's head. So now I know that is a cluster and its named Collinder 69 - thanks for the education!
@John - the ONAG is great. It obviously wasn't critical for this shot, but it makes prime focus imaging a breeze - guiding through the primary optics while finding bright guide stars is easy. Its not cheap, but I think it was one of my best astrophotography upgrades.
Thanks again everyone.
