A Quantum 4 Jupiter

Had a couple minutes this evening and was itching to try out the Quantum 4 with the Meade 884 tripod. Pretty mild also this evening and clear so I also took some video with a Philips webcam. I did not use the internal barlow but used a Orion Shorty plus 2X. Here's the set up.

Had a pretty good alignment and the scope tracked very well. The tripod is also very stable and any time it was bumped, it settled very quickly. Captured @ 1000 frames. Final stack was @ 335. Here's what I got before the clouds rolled in.

That looks pretty good, CG. Still a very high end little scope with world class optics. I took the liberty of tweaking your Jupiter a bit, hope you don't mind.

Thanks Richard that looks alot better. That's what I was going for! My processing skills are a little rusty.......and lacking. This "little" scope never ceases to amaze me.

Great work Scott, and Richard. One question: for planetary photography, how does the Orion shorty plus compare to using the Q4's internal barlow?

Thanks for the compliment Bob, but I cannot comment on the difference between the two barlows regarding imaging, since I have'nt used the internal one while imaging yet. There really was no reasoning for using the Orion over the internal one, other than I always use it with the webcam on my other scopes because it performs so well. I know the Orion is a 3 element, while the Q4 may be a doublet. Both are 2x. Next time I'll try the internal one for comparison. Visually they both perform well.

Thanks Scott. I can't doubt you on going with the Orion plus since it works for your camera in other settings -- especially having not done it myself. I'd guess that the Q4's f/15 light cone is pretty forgiving. I always miss the quick internal Barlow with other scopes.
