During my visit with the faculty of the Chabot, I was emotional, not only by the beauty of history, but by the Chabot's astonishing astronomical library. The librarian said he never met anyone as elated with joy to see it. One incredible thing that resided were the actual plates from the entire Palomar Sky Survey. The colossal drawers had hundreds upon hundreds of plates and a lighting board. I was intoxicated with faint photons which had reached each one of them in the flesh. It's difficult to describe the feeling you get while looking directly at them. It's entirely different than looking at a processed computer image, each image is real and right in front of you. As I took the magnifier, I examined the plates with close scrutiny. I told the librarian I was at a loss for words in fact the library was so astonishing, I was deeply saddened that the public didn't even realize the gold mind of astronomical books and history. It was totally beyond human description. This Alvan Clark refractor was one of many emotional experiences for me. I cannot come close to describing what a mechanical marvel it was, even to this very second. Venus in broad daylight was stunning and color free.

Of all the images, Pic6 is probably one of the most astonishing of them all. The magnifier reels the setting circle down to extreme accuracy.

Thank you for the wonderful images of that beautiful classic telescope. I can only imagine what stories came from sitting in that gorgeous chair. I am in awe. Thanks again.

I am emotionally moved just looking at the photos. I think I would go into shock if I were there. Thanks for the photos.

Hi Dan, Thank you for posting your images and feelings about visiting Chabot. I live in California, but have not visited. I hope to check that off my list soon.
I have seen a few large Clarks in my travels and the always evoke strong emotions. Their excellence and elegance never ceases to amaze. Thanks again, Dan

Computerized scopes must be comprehended cognatively, as abstract gadgets that do what they are told. Mechanical marvels are understood tactilely. We touch them (or imagine, accurately, how it would feel if we did touch them), and understand them --"get a feel for them"-- with our innate senses. This is a much deeper level of learning. Strictly speaking, that Clark works no differently from my 60mm Jason 313, yet the vastly enhanced Clark describes the heavens writ large. It's not just that it reveals far more; it feels overwhelmingly different, leaving an impression at once spiritual and tactile. Fie on astronomers who believe that the era of GoTo negates the capacity to be able to find a healthy covenant of objects with one's own eyes and hands! The body feels the mass of Clark's tube while slewing to the next bejeweled prize.
