Telrad on a EON 120 ED? new
      #5562750 - 12/09/12 04:34 PM

I've been looking for a Sky Surfer III finder for my EON for when I'm using it on my Alt/AZ mount as it would fit conveniently in the finder base already provided on the telescope. Then I realized I had a spare Telrad base and I could possibly just use the Telrad from my dob.

However, the base does not fit between the rings and there doesn't seem to be any reasonable place to put it.

Have any of you EON 120 ED owners installed a Telrad and if so, how did you do it?

Thanks!

This Scopestuff is what I use but mounted on my rings with an additonal dovetail shoe

Thanks, that looks like a simple solution, but it costs the same as the smaller finder. Hmmm...

I just gave up on the idea of using a Telrad and used a Rigel Quickfinder on my EON 120. I use it along with a GSO RACI finder.

Doug,

I think you may be right. I wish the Baader would start shipping again. I always had problems finding the red circles on a Rigel when I had one.

Jim, I also like the Sky Surfer III, but gave up on obtaining one. The Rigel is light enough to not cause balance problems, but the parallax issue does take some getting used to. I've used them for years on small scopes though, so no issues for me.

On edit: You know, I was actually thinking about the Baader Sky Surfer V, which seems to be in stock in a few places. Looks pretty cool, but it's expensive and you don't seem to hear too much about it.

Telrad + Eon 120 should be illegal. There, I said it....

Agreed, Steve. It was just gonna be a cheap solution, an ugly one, but cheap.

True that. But, if you think that's bad, you should have seen the looks I got when I had a Telrad mounted on my AP 130 f/8.35 a few years back.

If you think that's bad, I darn near had to remove the Telrad from my 16 inch because it messed so badly with the attractive, handcrafted, time tested look..

Telrad???

Jon

When I mounted my Telrad, I used an old dovetail I had laying around.

Steve,

Nice solution. I have already purchased another Orion dovetail and mounted it on top to use as a handle. It's too narrow to support the Telrad base. Can you use your dovetail as a handle, or is it too wide for a good secure grip?

Beauty and the beast indeed. I mounted a Telrad on my Eon 120 with a 3/4 x 3/8 x 8 1/4" strip of wood as pictured below. the standard Telrad mount has existing holes and is screwed to the wood and the wood strip with 1/4" holes bolted to the scope rings with chrome socket bolts that came with it.

My prototype was pine I think, the pictured one is oak and I have some 1/2" black Delrin sheet I might use some rainy day but the waxed oak looks just fine for now.

Mel,

Thanks, that gives me an idea. I have some 1/8" black plastic sheets that I could layer to make a small platform that would mount on top of my dovetail. I would still prefer the nice small Baader, but this may do in the mesntime.
