Do these induce any reduction in rigidity?

They are plenty rigid. I used them in my upper cage assembly to join the two rings, I can crank down the bolts pretty tight without problem. I suspect it would be almost impossible to pull one out.

They are tricky to find in McMaster-Carr because they are called in that catalog "Tube Connecting Nuts", threaded tube inserts and variations on this bring up nothing.

These are used in bicycle frame building where they are called "star nuts". Type that into Google and you will get lots of suppliers for the bike market (this will also work in McMaster-Carr).

Other places that carry them:

http://www.dobstuff.com/
http://www.jwwinco.com/products/section7/gn992/
http://www.mjvail.com/holokrome/hk.html
http://www.marvolus.com/Inserts_double-fin.asp

Why aren't we calling the "star nuts"? We're astronomers for pete's sake! If we did we no one would have trouble finding them!

Although you can't pull them out, you can push them farther in.

That is, if you find you pole too long, you can shorten it.
