An inspiration to so many of us he was hugely respected and admired. I had the privelege of meeting him twice, he was a true gentleman of the old school, generous and willing to talk astronomy to anyone be they expert or rank novice. One of my first ever books was a pocket observers guide written in his unique pithy style. I can also remember picking up a second hand copy of his book "The Amateur Astronomer" and finding that someone had pressed cornflowers in it! I can trace my love of visual observation to reading about his experiences. What I find fitting though is that seeing as he was an avid observer of the Moon he died as we head into the very thin phase of a waning Moon. To me that seems appropriate.
