I never met him, but he was my mentor. Without Patrick there wouldn't have _been_ an amateur astronomy for me." It was my mother buying me the 1970 edition of Patrick Moore's "The Amatuer Astronomer" that sparked my life long interest in astronomy. I wonder how many of us have had that experience. Professor Brian Cox, Terry Pratchet, and Brian May amongst many are on record as saying the same. There must be a whole generation of professional and amateur astronomers that he kick started.
