spend my money new

Okay, here's a (not quite) theoretical situation:

Newbie with enough funds to buy ONE superb piece of equipment. Going to be doing visual observing for now, but AP is most definitely in my-- er, HIS-- future. Have a small grab-and-go refractor (my daughter's soon-to-be Christmas present, specifics in my sig) available already. Home base is light-polluted, excellent dark sky site about 2 hrs away, so portability a definite need. Not considering used equipment due to inability to judge condition, desire for warranty and factory/dealer support. Prefer refractors due to simplicity.

Options:
(1) top-of-the-line (but still portable) mount: A-P Mach1 or 900, for example
(2) top-of-the-line OTA: TV NP127, for example
(3) psychiatric consultation

Thanks in advance!
-- Chris

TEC or equivalent on Losmandy mount.

No need for psychiatric consultation. If you have it, flaunt it!

Since you stated ONE superb piece of equipment and you think you will get into AP, go for the mount now, that's where you want to spend your money first for any thoughts of AP.

Practice with the small OTA and learn the basics, then go for the superb OTA.

@Maverick199 - I keep looking at the Losmandy mounts, but the issues with their Gemini system keep scaring me off

@rigel123 - Your advice is exactly the way I'm leaning. At the top of my wish list is the A-P Mach1GTO and their Eagle portable pier. I'm sure my daughter won't mind if I "borrow" her scope from time to time. BTW, I looked at your astrophotos at the link in your sig: they are *spectacular*! Definitely something for me to aspire to emulate!

Also keep in mind portability. Those mounts can get pretty heavy.

@Maverick199 - I think I have no illusions on that score: "portable" is certainly a relative term, especially (from all I've read) when it comes to mounts for AP! I am trying to keep weight in mind, though it's hard when in the grip of "for only $500 more ..."

@Paco_Grande - LOL! Already been through that mid-life crisis! One convertible and one sport sedan later, I'm back to driving a Mazda.

Thanks for the kind comment. You will notice that the majority of my DSO's are with an 80mm OTA, it's a great size scope for many objects.

I was in fact quite pleased to see that -- it might help to ward off "aperture fever" for a while!

assuming that cost is not an issue,
I would go to the astrophoto forums to see their recommendations for starting,
get a midsized APO (90-106) scope,
start visual but move up to AP when ready

@edwincjones - That's my plan exactly. I'd love to get a TV NP101, but after the expense of the mount, I think it's out of reach for now. As suggested above, I'm going to spend my time learning the mount and practicing with my daughter's OTA (the 80mm scope in my sig).

For those reading this thread, I've decided on the Astro-Physics Mach1GTO mounted on their Eagle6 portable pier as my "sky's the limit" purchase.

Once Christmas arrives, I'm going to ask my sweet daughter if I can borrow from time to time the OTA from the Orion kit Santa is bringing her. (Also, I've just ordered a MoonLite focuser as an upgrade to that scope.)

Thanks very much to all for the input and suggestions!

sounds reasonable
I suspect the learning curve for AP is steep/long,
and you will know what you need when you get there
