WooHoo- finally found a 6" f5 new

I have been waiting for one of these to show up and finally found this one today in Benicia, CA at an antique shop. It came as pictured on a nice Polaris mount with RA drive. The finder is funny- it is an old Visioflex meant for a rangefinder camera- has a 135mm lens on front. The lens is a beaut- coatings are perfect and not a scratch on it! Nice 32mm TV widefield came with it too. And it was cheap to boot! Sorry- not trying to gloat, just happy :-)

The lens cell housing is different on this one that most of the other homebrew ones like this I have seen and it is HEAVY.

These things are fun in a really dark sky!

Here's one made by my late friend Dick Zanteson. The tube is a beautiful blue annodized, with a nicely machined backplate and a huge rack and pinion focuser made from a large binocular microscope.

I need a dewshield! I've been using a paint bucket with the bottom cut out of it. Not very attractive, but it works okay.

Is this a Jaegers lens? Or some aerial photography lens?

Looks very cool. I'm just envious of you finding a Polaris RA drive

Go to Home depot and get a small roll of flashing aluminum.
Rolls easily into the proper diameter and some tape holds it in place. Easiest dewshield I have ever used.

That is a really nice deep sky scope. Love that finder that is truly different.

Those are most definitely six spacer Jaegers lenses. Nice scopes guys.

You might want to hang on to the Leitz Visoflex and 135mm f/4.5 Hektor. Those are not low cost items.

If you want to off them let me know.

Thanks for the comments - Tim- love the focuser on yours! Mine came with the Celestron flexible dew shield from 6" sct- works well.

Don- unfortunately this is not the Leitz visoflex- it is a Japanese version- same with the lens = "Sun Telephoto 135mm f3.8" - definitely cool but not top dollar stuff.

Do not discount it too easily. A lot of vintage Japanese (Leica knock off stuff) has a lot of value in its own right I.e., highly desirable to vintage rangefinder camera buffs.

six spacer jeagers lenses? Were all jeagers large lenses spaced with six spacers? I have a 6" F8 and have been trying to figure out the spacing of the lenses. I must admit these 6" lenses provide awesome views of the night skies. However, when I bumb up the power on this lens it is not happy. I could understand that with an F5. However, this is an F8 and should be more forgiving.

Another question. I see that it looks like there are spacers on the back of flint also. Is this to protect the flint and cushion it from back of the cell?

Yes my Jaegers 6" f/8 has 6 spacers. Never seen a 6" Jaegers without them. The teflon coated spacers mounted on the retension ring are to protect the flint. My lens takes high power well. I always use a 6mm Or for 203x and can use the Jaegers 3x barlow for 618x. Never noticed anything out of the ordinary with the seeing conditions as they were at the time. I regularly compare high powered images between my Jaegers and the 10" Istar....just a huge light gathering difference that's all. Mike

Yeah- I thought the rear spacers were weird too (there is a ring on my Jaegers 6" f10 but not tabs like these) and actually the cell is a little different than my other Jaegers and others I have seen but it is entirely possible that the cell was purchased/made separately from the lens and the tab spacers were just what the ATM'er had on hand-

You sure that those spacers are not between a third lens?
Cannot tell in the picture, but that is normally where I have found more spacers.

Hehehe- an air spaced 6" f5 triplet? Nah- didn't get THAT lucky- the rear spacers are between the flint and the retaining ring- not sure how they would be held in place against rotation like this (or why for that matter), but haven't taken it apart to look yet

I used a 6" F/10 Jeagers before and the color was too much for my taste.
