In terms of scopes that I think would work, key here is I think, have refractors from 70mmSV, 80mm TMB,a to 110mm SV. No matter what I try, the field of view I get is pretty small. Even with my SV 70mm I can't get, for example, all of M45. I have an ATIK 314E camera. Is the issue scope related or camera related or operator error?

You can find a field of view calculator online, but the calculation is not that complicated. The easiest variable to change is focal length, have you looked into a focal reducer?

Pixel Array Dimension = Number of Pixels x Pixel Size
Field of View = 3438 arcminutes X pixel array dimension / focal length
You need to do it for both length and height unless you have square pixels.

The chip on the Atik 314 is pretty small. you're not going to get extremely wide fields with any scope using that chip.

Here are a couple of options with the 314 chip. I use a TRF 2008 0.8X reducer and got this of M45 with my ED80T
And for really wide shots I have been experimenting with a Pentax SP1000 55mm lens hooked up to my Atik314L+ to get this wide field of the Orion and Horsehead area.
So where there is a will there is a way!

telescopemullet,
Are you using the 314E or the 314L+?
I'm using the 314E paired with an Astro-Tech AT65EDQ. It has a focal length of 422mm so I get a field of view of 39.3' x 52.7'. The 314L+ with this scope covers 54.5' x 73', not quite enough to fully cover the Pleiades. As others have pointed out, the calculations are quite simple, but you can also use tools like CCDCalc (free) which will show you a picture of certain objects with a reference frame showing what area your camera / scope combination will cover.
If you are using the one-shot-color version of the 314, you might look into one of the camera lens couplers out there, something like this: http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p4389_M...
With a 55mm lens the 314E would cover 5° x 6.7° and the 314L+ would cover 7° x 9.3°.
Regards, David
