End of the World

The end of the world (12/21) is only ten days away now. Does anyone know what time it's supposed to happen? I don't want to log on to CN the next day and see all these observing reports saying how great it was, and me having slept through it.

I believe it's midnight, and the Mayans were on West Coast time zone.

Actually, it's Central time. But there was variation among the pre-Columbian Maya about when the day began: at sunrise for some, at sunset for others. In any case, not midnight.

National Geographic Channel found a Mayan ruine in Guatamala written by scribes which shows that the Mayan Calendar is cyclical and doesn't end. December 2012 is not the end of their calendar.

If the Mayans were so advanced and so smart to predict the very end of the world, how come they didn't see the conquistadores coming?

Too late - my first car ('74 chevy) had an odometer that only had 6 digits. It rolled over wayyy back in '86, so by the same logic (we've run out of digits!) the world has already ended.

Gavin, you're making a mockery of the entire issue. New Zealand is safe because it's on the protected side of the International Date Line.

You guys are all completely missing it.

The world ends on Dec 21, and we all know that. It also happens to be my wife's birthday. So, we are having an end of the world birthday party. Invitations make it clear, since it's end of the world anyways, feel free to run your visa (or mastercard) to the limit when shopping for gifts for the birthday girl. I have 'primed the pump' so to speak, and her new TOA-130 will be on display for the event.

I need to read up on this subject a little more. Most of my friends and coworkers have seen my telescope related pictures and posts on Facebook, and even some of my Jupiter images. So, obviously Im their go to astrologer in times of crisis.
