The end of the world (12/21) is only ten days away now. Does anyone know what time it's supposed to happen? I don't want to log on to CN the next day and see all these observing reports saying how great it was, and me having slept through it.

I believe it's midnight, and the Mayans were on West Coast time zone.

Actually, it's Central time. But there was variation among the pre-Columbian Maya about when the day began: at sunrise for some, at sunset for others. In any case, not midnight.

Nothing to be concerned about. The time honored practice of turning them inside out should suffice.

Too late - my first car ('74 chevy) had an odometer that only had 6 digits. It rolled over wayyy back in '86, so by the same logic (we've run out of digits!) the world has already ended.

You guys are all completely missing it.

The world ends on Dec 21, and we all know that. It also happens to be my wife's birthday. So, we are having an end of the world birthday party. Invitations make it clear, since it's end of the world anyways, feel free to run your visa (or mastercard) to the limit when shopping for gifts for the birthday girl. I have 'primed the pump' so to speak, and her new TOA-130 will be on display for the event.

Well, it's a race against time.
In about 5 billion years, the red giant sun will engulf the Earth and vaporize the planet.
At nearly the same time, however, the Moon will finally leave the gravitational influence of the Earth and become an independent planet orbiting the sun. Alas, it will be in nearly the same orbit as the Earth, so after a few orbits....Blam! Impact with the Earth!
But which will come first? Can't say.

It's all moot to us here on Earth, though. Some time between 800 million and 1200 million years from now the gradually-getting-hotter sun will raise the temperature of the surface of the Earth above the boiling point of water and the only life left on Earth will be the bacteria deep in the Earth in the interstices between rock particles.
We are 3.5 billion years through a 4.5 billion year history of life on Earth.

Though an asteroid might hit the Earth and raise havoc, it won't extinguish all life on Earth--maybe just all life larger than dogs and cats.

All rather prosaic endings compared to the Mayan calendar thing. I seem to recall a short story by Isaac Asimov called "The Nine Billion Names of God". Now that was a zen ending.

That was an Arthur C. Clark story. (I miss Arthur C!)

None of those other endings matter, though, as by that time we will have evolved into a super-intelligent, toga-wearing race of people with bald, butt-shaped heads, and will have moved to another dimension. The galaxy is full of them. Toga manufacturing is the interstellar trade item to be involved in.

Just looked again at a copy of the Dresden Codex online. Right there, down in the corner, is a reference to the end of the Mayan calendar.

From the Mayan, it translates as "fiscal cliff."

No, they were following the Apple model of calendar design - built in obsolescence. Do you have any idea how much profit they planned to make this year selling new big, round, stone-carved calendars?

The end won't happen until either sunrise or sunset at the longitude of the Mayan calendar makers apparently and maybe not until those times on Sunday or Monday.

Another hiccup for Mayan doomsday believers: Although many scholars agree that Dec. 21 is the proper date on our calendar matching the end of the 13th b'ak'tun, there is some uncertainty over this, because some Mayan calendar units may have clicked over at sunset and others at sunrise. Some researchers have suggested that Dec. 23 or 24 may be a more accurate fit, Witschey said. Either way, however, the Maya would not have been running for their doomsday bunkers.

Maybe it'll end on the 21st, and again on the 23rd for those who missed it the first time.

YAY! Let's all head down to Tikal, or somewhere, and have a few hundred celebratory human sacrifices! Just like we did on Y2K!

Human sacrifice too much? Let's build a henge, paint ourselves blue and run around screaming?

Sounds like a normal day around here. Customer deadlines. The End of the World has nothing on that...

I hope something happens soon, I have other things to do. I've got reservations at Milliway's.

This is the first end of the world in recent memory that happens on a weekend. It should have been a good one!

The doom sayers will keep predicting the end of the world. Seems to be at least a few times a year.

The thing is...They only have to be right once.
