Both of those look promising, especially considering the price this little camera is!
Be interested to see what results are achieved when it's modified!

The half second, one second and 4 second M42 images are actual LNTECH screen shots taken with my SLT A33 (the screen was a 7" older LCD ) .
No filters of any kind , just scope , reducer and camera .
More importantly, the images are taken with a modified LNTECH camera .
For now the mod consisted only in disabling the AGC functionality that adjusts the A/D converter gain and replacing it with a circuit that allows manual adjustment of the gain in small increments.
The way this camera model was used by people (unmoddded) is with the AGC off (gain set to 6dB, which is minimum) .
OTher setting for the unmodded cam result in washed out images.
In these images the gain was up to about 36dB with 6dB more to go and no sign of color washing out .
At this stage I wasn't interested in lugging a laptop outside for pretty pics, all I wanted to determine was if the camera has potential and if the major drawback of using it as minimum gain could be circumvented .
That's why I didn't try to increase the signal to noise by doing a wider field . That and the fact that I was in a hurry and couldn't find the correct spacer between camera and reducer .
Next step is adding a temperature regulated Peltier and a few other odds and ends such as a higher resolution output .S-video is on the way after Peltier .After that I will integrate a USB interface for image capturing if the S-video shows enough improvement over composite .This is fun .

Very nice.
Those modified 1-4s exposures do indeed show real promise. I look forward to what some noise reduction (cooling) will do.
Will you consider documenting your AGC disabling circuitry (and any other mods)?

I wish you great suceess with the mods. I like this little cam, but the firmware limits are annoying. Your work shows the potential for a high performance to cost ratio. My skills might not be up to doing the mods, but I do hope that you share in detail.

The mods are a work in progress right now . A partial list includes cutting some board traces under a microscope , soldering surface mount fine pitch parts , downloading some code into a microcontroller . However, this breadboard is just a proof of concept . I will add cooling and depending on how these all perform, a remote control , S-video and USB for computer capture . I'll keep the forum posted as to the tests and work progress .

Any idea of the cost of additional components, and the number of hours of work required? I wonder how this would compare to purchasing something ready-made like the Mallincam Jr. Or a cooled MC, if cooling is added here.

I had a quick play last night as there was roughly half an hour gap between clouds. Seeing was terrible as there was a lot of moisture in the air and that seemed to be emphasizing the moons glow across the sky. Anyway, it showed promise, so am looking forward to a moonless night.
The one thing I was struggling with was the colour. Everything had a tinge of red (even the noise! ) So I tried to adjust it and the blue looked too much then, I couldn't get a decent balance. What have people on here used as the colour settings? Whatever I tried didn't look natural at all.

mattflastro, I am really impressed with how you are working with this camera to improve upon its abilities. I am very happy with mine and have found the limitations as you have mentioned to be annoying as well. However in really dark skies I found that it was exceptional. It's ability to perform in light polluted skies is very degraded especially when using AGC. Please keep up the great work and keep us posted.
Thanks again I always believed this had great potential ever since I found this smaller model a while back. (Earlier posts)
