I need to add a little weight on my balance bar and looking for a 3 or 5lb. weight. I am not sure what other manufactures weights will work on the CG-5. Will a CGEM weight work? I would like to stay away from adding an extension to the existing bar.

A 5 lb barbell weight can be sandwiched between 2 counter weights or a Orion 7.5 lb cw will work with the CG-5

If the barbell weight has a flat surface you can use Scotch Permanent Mounting Tape (grey foam with red plastic release layer) to attach it to the top of the normal counterweight. Hardware stores, Kmart etc stock it. I've done it. It works.

I use the counter weight bar from a CGEM mount. It is 3" longer than the CG-5 bar. It has kept me from having to add another weight onto my CG-5s with various scopes mounted. You can purchase a CGEM bar from Celestron on line for $25. Here's my CG-5 with a C8 that is just a tad too heavy for a single 11 lb. CW with the CG-5 bar, but it balances with an 11 lb CW alone with the longer CGEM bar.

I posted a wanted ad on the classifieds a week ago and was contacted quickly by a fellow who seems to have a supply of weights. I got a 3.7 lb perfect match for my stock 11 lb Celestron weight for $12 shipped. Give it a try.

I got some skywatcher smaller weights, they have a small plastic reducer ring inside for reducing the diameterg to 18mm instead of 20mm of the cgem/cg5 bar. A screw driver and a light hit with a hammer took it off with ease.they fit perfectly.. Here you can se them on my mount http://postimage.org/image/hvrg1ptnr/

Synta and Vixen make weights in the 3.8-4 pound range. For anything under that you can add Tractor Supply 1" washers for about a $1.19 a pound.
