Hi Dick,
Don't worry, I will not bid against you in the auction. On a more serious note, I think if it was my rock I would wait until it was published in the Meteoritical Bulletin before selling it.

Peter, You go ahead and put this in your personal collection.Make all of us here on CN proud to say we know the guy that bought this gem.MAPS said it may be paired to DaG 400. I am in no longer the position to any bidding, even on e-Bay. Don't know what would happen if I jokingly put in a bid and turned out I was the only bidder.

Hi Dick,
Whenever I am tempted to buy a lunar meteorite I look at my sample of NWA 4936 and tell myself that I don't need another meteorite.

Peter,That is the sign of intelligence and true self discipline. Something I lacked BIG TIME when I got hooked on Meteorite collecting.

Hi Dick,
If DaG 1058 is not big enough for you perhaps you would prefer NWA 5000 instead.

What a unbelievable find that was for Mr. Adam Hupe. Rather than cut it up immediately and most likely make a fortune on it in no time, he sent it nearly around the world for years to have kids of all ages gaze in amazement at a piece of the moon only inches from their noses. He is one fine gentleman.

Just got my November S&T and there is a 2/3 page ad for the Heritage Auctions in it;in addition to the moon meteorite previously mentioned, there are 99 other rare meteorites up for auction this coming Oct 14th.
goto HA.com/6089 for photos/details about the meteorites

The rock sold. I didn't see many bargains in the auction.

I'm stunned that it sold at that price. That is not a knock on the specimen, but the buyer's market on big-ticket meteorites has not been very good in recent years. This sale is the largest I am aware of, in at least the last five years. Six-figure sales are not unheard of, but they are not very common either.
And I agree with Peter, not a lot of bargains at this auction. Especially when you factor in the extra fees a big auction house charges, which might amount to 25% or more of the final bid price. (it varies from auction house to auction house of course)
Those were some gorgeous specimens however, and it would be nice to win the lottery and go on a bidding spree at an auction like that.

PS - this is a good example of mainstream media attention boosting seller fortunes. This auction was picked up by all of the major newswires and blogs. The right buyer just happened to catch one of those stories or press releases. But sometimes these big auctions get ignored as well, so the market is a fickle mistress.

You can obtain lunar meteorite fragments for reasonable prices from reputable dealers. Adam Hupe has many for auction on ebay. Another good source is meteoritemarket.com.

I second meteoritemarket.com. Eric Twelker is a first-rate dealer and professional. I have bought many high-quality specimens from him at very good prices. He is one of the few dealers who I can recommend without any reservations whatsoever. Good guy and good meteorites.
