Suggestions needed for new organization
      #5576892 - 12/18/12 07:39 AM

Using a 17-inch permanently mounted Newtonian Cassegrain telescope at Ohio University, Zanesville, I am trying to organize a local astronomy club. I would appreciate having suggestions about techniques used by others to make a good experience for new members. What works? What ideas can you suggest to make this organization effective for all ages? I've taught astronomy and used this telescope often, but need help to make an effective regional club. I will appreciate any help you can offer.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights! You've come to the right place for answers, but I think you'll get better advice on starting a club in our Astronomy Clubs and Star Parties Forum, so I'm moving this thread there.

Take a look at this link: http://www.astroleague.org/al/socaids/socaidid.html
It is from the Astronomical League and will provide some good insight. Here is some more information as well:

1-registrar with the AL as a club
2-invite neighbor clubs to your events
3-get some local exposure from the press for events
4-create events of public interest
--a KC club is having an" end of the world" star party this weekend,
-- eclipse or comet events, etc;
--one local club here has a "using your new telescope" star party after xmas
5-schedule regular public star parties
6-invite classes from local schools for events
7-be patience, they will come-

See if your local school district has a space science facility (planetarium, etc). If not, see if they have a STEM coordinator and network with them.

Hello Irene, I am president of a local astronomy society that went from a few members to events with great turnouts over a couple of years.

I would start by doing public observing nights at the university. Do some with the moon as it is really popular. Do nights on Saturn, Jupiter and DSO's. At each event, have a signup sheet where people can enter their email address and phone number so you can contact them later about volunteering and future events.

PM me and I will give you my phone number and we can chat if you like.

Three videos on growing your astronomy club are available from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

Consider setting up a separate "parent" organization (board members, chief executive/president), and keeping the sub organization ("club") void of the hassle of elections and other points of division. A club should be FUN. Our club has "chair's" that are appointed by our Executive.

Elections often result in hurt feelings, political 'groupings", and do not further the fun of astronomy. Not saying this works for everybody, but it has worked well with us. We set our board of directors up on the "Carver Model", which gives the CE broad powers. The CE's main job is to line up his eventual successor!
