Hi Pieter-Jan,
Looks like 2013 might be an exciting year with some bright comets (C/2011 L4 in March 2013 and C/2012 S1 in November 2013).
May I point out my top 3 of great books on the subject:

Comets: A Chronological History of Observation, Science, Myth, and Folklore (1991 - Donald Yeomans)
NASA SP-198 Atlas of Cometary forms
