I'm thinking about moving away from SCT's and switching over to a ES 127ED as my only telescope. Before I make any decisions I'd like to hear from current ES 127 ED owners as to how stable this scope would be on a CG5 ASGT mount. I don't like scopes that shake on a mount. As an example I find a 8" SCT with a 2" diagonal, dew shield and telrad the absolute limit of a CG5. I tried a 9.25 and it was too unstable for my taste.

My observing is only visual and I observe planets and doubles. No DSO's other than open clusters.

IMO, you will NOT like the 22 lb ES127 on a CG5 class mount. Many here will tell you it is adequate, but if you like your mounts rock solid (and I do too), you will find the CG5 an ongoing lesson in jiggly frustration.

I have to agree with Rob. If you feel that the CG-5 s at the limit with the load of your C8 then the much heavier and longer ES127 will be beyond that limit. I would say you need to move up to a CGEM. You can find them on the used market very reasonably priced and the sale of your CG-5 will cover a fair portion of that.

Thanks guys. Actually I do own a CGEM and used it when I owned a C6R. While I liked the C6R I have to keep my mount and scopes in the basement. With the CGEM the setup consisted of too many up and down trips. That's why I moved back to a 8" EdgeHD and a CG5. I have the CGEM as my backup mount in case the CG5 gives up the ghost. So it's either stick with the EdgeHD or move to a smaller Ed/Apo like a 102.

i had a ED100 on a CG-5 once upon a time and it was a sweet setup
i never had to take it apart just grab it and walk out the door .

very little jiggles ...the CG-5 has great "legs" . you may have to pull them out more to get the eyepiece right .

SO perhaps the limit of the CG5 ASGT mount would be a 120 f 8.3 such as the Omni 120?

I use my 127 on my CG-5 all the time and am quite happy with it. I do not extend the tripod legs, I do use a tripod extension and always use VSPs.

Javier, my LXD75 can just handle my 7kg NP127, but it's not ideal at all. There's a lot of vibration as you pump up the power, so I think your 127ED with be under-mounted with a CG5 class mount. Fox

This is likely about the same as when I use my 8-inch f/5 Newtonian on the CG5: it is bearable but not optimal. The problem isn't so much the extra weight, it's the fairly long tube.

Thanks for the input. If I go the refractor route I'll be sure to stick to something smaller for the CG5. I don't like under mounting a scope.

I would stick with the 90 to 102 f/7 or shorter range if you want to be happy with it. Longer and/or heavier will likely be more frustrating than enjoyable.

Thanks, I think that's the road I'm going to take. No scope bigger than a 102 on the CG5. I like mounting my scopes so that they are solid. To be honest I prefer my 8" EdgeHD on my CGEM rather than the CG5.

I have recently mounted my C80ED on my C8 and it rides on a CG5-AGST. Using the C80ED as a guide scope i can easily go 3 to 4 minutes with PHD or 40-90 seconds with the CG5 and the C8 at F5 without much problems using my Mallincam. I have not done much visual recently, but if its not windy i had seldom encountered any issues at F10 in terms of steadiness...

Al,

I too have no problems with weight on my CG-5s, but some don't have the same experience that we do. I mount my C8 and Onyx 80 with cameras and all, close to 30+ lbs, and get similar results. Javier finds that a C8 alone is a challenge for him on the CG-5, therefore I recommended he move up to different mount.

Too each his own I guess. People have been telling me for a couple years that my ES127ED APO has been undermounted. I usually just ignore them and enjoy the hell out my setup - thank you very much!

I have a 130mm F7 refractor on the same setup as EdTheEdge and it works fine. For the money, I am very happy with it.

I use my ES 127 exclusively on my CG5 for visual (It goes on the CGEM for AP). If you want to do it get the anti vibration pads, do not extend the tripod legs, and get the Orion 16" Sirius Pier extension for it. At that point vibration is at a minimum. *HOWEVER* if you want ZERO vibration (good luck) then you will need a CGEM DX with the legs fully retracted and MAY be able to do it with a CGEM in the same configuration but will need the Orion 8" Atlas pier extension for it.

The reason for those pier extensions are two fold. First is so that the OTA isn't hitting the legs and second (and most important) you don't have to lay down or get on your hands and knees to view things at zenith.

I both image and observe with an Orion 120ED on a Vixen GP/Synscan mount. I find I can use this setup at 225X with good effect. I know the Berlebach Uni tripod adds a lot of stability to the scope. This image of M31 was made with this combination. Lynn
