Dave, Thank you for this great article! I'm amazed that there's been no response here on it. The two photos showing what proper lighting can do, opposed to lighting that goes everywhere is eye-opening, to say the least. This would be a great article to show others that have lights that are not properly shielded.

I bought the clip on light covers like shown in the article for my spotlights in my driveway which I try not to leave on except when we are unloading our car. They weren't much money and really work great. Makes a huge difference. Now just the area where I want lit is illuminated and the light doesn't spread all over the yard.
I cringe with the skyglow coming from our locale stores and malls it lights up the whole sky.
Great article maybe some will see the benefits of properly directed light.

A very interesting article. I am at present trying to get a new neighbor to redirect his outside twin 150's downward but sadly one of his spots shines directly onto my property and kills any chance of observing the night sky. It blinded the wife last week who was wearing new glasses and she nearly drove into our drainage ditch.
I have requested the landlord to get his tenant to cooperate but the young lad is a bit of a yahoo and not bothered. We live in the country outside of city limits in a small single street with 1.4 acre blocks.
Unfortunately 2 of the 8 houses did not sell and the landlord desperate for funds rented the 2 houses to folks through HUD!
We don't seem to have any lighting ordinances in rural Texas so at a bit of a loss at this moment in time.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights! Glad to have you join us here!
How about some sort of light-blocking panels? Here's a link (scroll down on it) for several light-block panels that folks have made.

Thanks for the information Carol and welcome.
I think that might be the way to go . The chaps spotlight shines directly over my existing 6ft wooden fence . I will also have to design some sort of extensions to fit on top of the fence. May have to paint a nice star scene mural on the other side
