Look at the sequence below, around the first or second of January our comet passed from one side of the ecliptic to the other, so at this moment the tail was almost not visible, tail and coma are mixed for our telescopes. At the left of my sequence the tail was followed by the comet, Jan. 2 tail and coma were aligned with earth, then the comet precede his tail. As from Jan. 3th we can again detect the tail. It's a bit like a cat playing with its tail. What did you think about this ? You are lucky to see it like that. You have much more clear skies than me and much darker sky too. I observed it on january 2nd and that explained why I didn't see the tail. I never figured that. It will require that I go to a dark site to get a view worth sketching. Cloudy skies this time of year make the effort mostly futile. Your sketches are great keep posting them.
