need help in purchasing a sct
      #5590039 - 12/26/12 05:35 PM

i have a new cg5 goto mount and trying to choose between a new meade 10" sct ota and a celestron 9.25 sct ota. both scopes are being sold from high point. the two scopes are the same price, with the 10" i get 1 more inch of apature but heavier (not really sure how heavy)the celestron 9.25 is lighter but less apature. what im concerned about, will the cg5 handle the weight of the meade 10" and if so, it would be my choice. any options on this subject would be appreciated. thanks, donnie

I had a similar set up (10" ACF), but needed an extension on the counter weight shaft in order to balance the set up.
Given the choice, I'd go for either a 10" ACF or the C9.25.

Mike

If you plan on doing any astrophotography the 10" will cause you issues in my opinion. Even the 9.25" is pushing it on that mount. I don't think the extra .75" is going to get you anything especially since Celestron scopes have better optics in my humble opinion.

I use the 10" MeadeR (ACF) and a CG5-GT for my outreach setup. I have three 11lb counterweights to balance it. I have a 10X50 finder and a Crayford focuser added to it. Just make sure that you get the balance very good.

I would go with the c9.25, the lighter weight will be helpful, the optics are on the side of the Celestron, the image shift will most likely be better with the Celestron, and the planetary views will also be better with the c9.25.
I have owned both.

thanks for the feed back. just one other question, will the 9.25 sct separate the stars in globular clusters. this is what i observe the most and enjoy. i have a meade 8" and its border line but my orion 10" dob does a good job on globs, thanks, donnie

Most globs look very nice in a 9.25" assuming dark skies. It is the one area where you see most difference from the 8". If you're a visual observer, the 9.25" is the perfect scope for the CG-5, IMO.
