I want to set up a grab and go telescope on an alt-az mount. I'm thinking of the Vixen Porta II but I also have an extra Celestron 2" steel tripod.
I see that the Porta head can also be mounted on Vixen HAL130 tripod, just as the Vixen equatorial heads may.
From this I would think the Porta head should directly attach to the Celestron tripod (as the Vixen and Celestron equitorial heads are reportedly interchangeable, at least as far as tripod fit)
Is this correct? Has anyone done this combo?
I would expect the combo to be much sturdier than the normal Porta tripod (and heavier of couse). Also I could save a few $$$$ and just buy the head.

Seems to work just fine...if you can find a CG-5 tripod; I still haven't been able to for my Porta II

I found several threads here on CN that all say they go directly together. You have to remove the azimuth post from the CG-5 (or ASGT) tripod but it is threaded into the top plate. Easily removed. As you see above there's a photo of the combo from RTLR 12, another CN member.
I have a spare CG-5 tripod that I bought a couple of years ago for an different project and now I am planning on putting a Porta II head on it for a super Grab & Go setup, pairing it up with an 80mm scope of some sort.
