My 18 year old daughter got me a new Astronomy book for Christmas.
UNIVERSE The Definitive visual guide. DK books Smithsonian.
At first I thought it would be a pictorial Hubble book, but it is very informative with coverage from planets to star types to galaxy types. Very informative read much like the Tv series How the UNiverse works with Mike Rowe narrator. Excellent pics from many scopes not just the space telescopes.
My girl has kind of made a habit of getting me astro books for gifts lately and I am not complaining.

My wife gave me the latest edition of Peter Birrens "Objects in the Heavens".
And I ordered the "Great Atlas" for myself, but that one is still in the mail.

I bought a great copy of Wilkins & Moore's "The Moon" (1955) from a fellow CN'er as a present for myself; does that count?

I agree Backyard Astronomer's Guide is great. Also Sue French's Deep-Sky Wonders.

Hi Robert - I would have to agree with you I think I paid maybe $10 for an absolutely unused mint condition addition with dust jacket! Come to think of it I need to get a copy of the Cambridge Double Star Atlas and that would be a good place to look,g ..... Thanks and Happy New Year... Tony

Congrats on finding a copy, its everything a great book should be, and the personal checklist/entry log makes it perfect.

Forgive my offering a response to a question not directed to me, but... This is a first-rate book IMO. Photos of a lot of DSOs done by Veherenberg, all at the same scale for comparison purposes. A lot of supplementary photos and info, as well, plus a long commentary by the author. It's a big hardcover with ultra-high quality glossy paper. A really wonderful book, and well worth having. Too bad it's out of print.

No apology needed Rick. I value your input on any kind of book review. Just wish that I had purchased this 20 years ago.

I used to own this book and must have given it away some years ago. Looking now there are two editions, 1978 by Sky Publishing and 1984 by Cambridge University Press.
Any comments on which is better?
Thanks

I don't know. Mine is by Sky Pub, Cambridge U. Press, *and* Treugesell-Verlag, copyright 1983, second printing 1988. No mention of 1978 or 1984. Are you looking at the right one? By Hans Vehrenberg?
