      #5593637 - 12/29/12 12:24 AM

iOptron iEQ45-AZ
In a website in China there appears a new version, the iOptron iEQ45-AZ equatorial mount, able to work also on AltAz mode.
As stated: Maximum loading in EQ mode = 20 kg,
Maximum loading in AltAz mode = 40 kg,
Self weight = 11.4 kg

Wow! Does anyone have a picture from another angle, how does it convert to Eq mode... Its great to see some real innovation in the low to mid price mounts... Meade, Skywatcher and now iOptron. I've held off upgrading my LXD75 for years now, so I am really keen to know of whats coming up. One issue is, however, is the chain of production, supply and distribution. Because ours is such a niche hobby, it always seems to be the case of waiting a long time (months to years) before things hit the market and availability becomes a reality for the common buyer... Hmmm ... from the looks of it, my guess is that it doesn't convert to equatorial mode. Looks like AZ-only.

It would be easy to add a wedge on this mount.

Not unless the firmware can accommodate equatorial operation. My Chinese is a bit rusty and can't seem to read the symbols. To the OP - do you have any information as to whether this mount can be operated in equatorial mode by putting it on a wedge?

Am I reading this wrong... Why is 'EQ' in the name then ? Or it's because it's derived from the original iEQ45 only? Fox

If it uses the same handbox as their other mounts, then there is an option to convert to EQ mode with a wedge.

Can anyone confirm that these parts are all you need if you have a recent version of the mount/hand controller?
(Neither of which were easy to find on the iOptron site):

iEQ45 AZ base

The docs I see on line for the iEQ45 with the above show that you basically take the mount off the normal base and use this instead (which holds the mount so the EQ dec shaft is horizontal). Here's the docs I found:

Converting from EQ to AZ

Apparently, the recent versions of the hand-controller firmware will work either EQ or AZ--there's a mode setting you change.

iEQ45AZ secondary saddle_shaft

And the above would allow you to hook on another scope on the counter-weight side of the AZ mode setup. (Although I don't see a way to have a counter-weight and another scope--which would be handy if the left-side one were smaller. And, it'd probably make sense to have the pier base rather than the tripod.

But, it looks like you don't have to buy the thing in the ready-to-go EQ/AZ form--you just buy the adapters (with the software and exact version of the mount being a question you have to deal with).

Very cool! OK, so now the only question is who to buy the iEQ45 from. I'll call CloudyNights' sponsor first, of course.

John
