The SN was "discovered" on 20121218 and is listed at mag 12.8. So, Ring in the New Year by observing a SN in Leo and to everyone a Happy New Year! Leo is well positioned in the morning, and the galaxy (a John Herschel discovery) is actually a faint, but large contact interacting pair, Vorontsov-Velyaminov 252. The small EW-extended component NE of the core, which is visible in the above screenshot, is NGC 3447A. I wonder if it can be detected visually. Mag. measured to 13.1 from 2 x 120 sec. exp. There's also an another object close by that I can't identify. It not non any other image I can find. Any thoughts to what it could be? Will try to get another image tonight. The colors suggest that it is either a superimposed star or a compact HII region. Maybe an artefact, variable ?? Indeed the spot in question seems to be W of the star and star cloud that I meant, and the difference in brightness seems too large to be explained by the spectrum. An asteroid is a good guess.
