Saturn, Dione, Enceladus & Tethys....
      #5602380 - 01/03/13 05:20 AM Attachment (104 downloads)

.....basically just a repro of my Saturn from the other night at 38 degrees except I realised afterwards that the 3 moons mentioned in the thread title were in the full FOV.....if I'd looked at an ephemeris before imaging I could've lowered Saturn on the screen a tad and also grabbed Rhea just off in left field and also Titan which was above and also just out of view here.....

Excellent image. Almost time for us northerners to get out and start on Saturn.

Hi Darryl,

Very well done! Saturn's colors are beautiful and brilliant the way they should be, and you've resolved the complete C-Ring and captured its true (observable) deep "Ice-Blue" color, most saturn images show the Crepe Ring as just plain grey looking, when it is not. Congratulations on your excellent processing!

Clear skies, Dan

Good catch Darryl, the Cassini Division is much more clear at Saturn's center with the higher tilt angle. I just noticed that your AS120MM has a maximum pixel setting of 1280x960 at 30 fps; that should be great for wide field shots.

Pete

Thanks very much Brian, Sam, the two Pauls (well, three of you including Paolo! ) Martus, Dan, Pete, Mert & Bob - much appreciated!

The Crepe Ring is most certainly a tough aspect to process satisfactorily Dan; as you say it's easiest to just make it that grayish appearance but even then it's a challenge and easy to dim/lose in processing: levels, curves, sharpening and gamma are some of the applications that can help or hinder its' appearance and when I'm lucky it's usually being carefull with gamma changes that assists the best.

Atmospherics allways conspire to alter the regimen adopted for different captures so what works on some doesn't necessarily apply to others.....even to the point where it just becomes too hard to get anything but a gray rendition to this very subtle and intriguing element of Saturn's Rings - noticing that with gamma in "linearity mode" during onscreen captures that the Crepe is usually very visible lead me to judicious gamma manipulations in processings.....but it only works and gives me what i hope for sometimes....!

Thank you also Glenn, Rob and Tassydevil - SkippySky promised some very nice viewing from home the other night but as is often the case it failed to deliver down here.....but another few weeks and we should really start to see something happen as far as imaging opportunities go with Saturn.

Of course, if the seeing manifests itself like it did for Jupiter a few nights back I wouldn't hesitate to target him again also..!
