On the lighter side, I finished painting my 10" f11. Based on the comments I received from my last post on first light, I paid homage to the Saturn V rocket.
Details: 10" f11 EzDSC Digital Setting Circles with my laptop EzCBP EQ Platform Explore Scientific 6" acromat Explore Scientific 20mm and 14mm 100 degree eyepieces Lots and lots of fun. Painting everything with my 12yo and 7yo daughters...priceless.

I suggest your next project be a cannon to knock out that pole light looming over your garage. No wonder you wanted a long-focus planetary scope...

That is crazy. Expect a visit from guys in suits if your neighbors see it. They'll think your going for an altitude record.

Crack me up or what! +1 and props to the artists for the orange fire coming out. You definitely need to show this at Riverside this year!

Jack,
I love your finder setup: a telrad, a ~50mm, and a ~6" fractor--you might never need an eyepiece in the 10" longer than 6mm

As my friend Kevin F has said many times, if you can't have fun with it, this hobby is no good! :-)
I need to work on wobble that has been introduced with the EQ Platform. I made it oversized to help with balance and stability, but I have not had a chance to look in detail at the new wobble. I think the weight is causing some flexure in the sector hinges.
I have some other photos with my two girls painting this with me with big ol' smiles on their faces. Some of my favorite moments ever...

I wonder if the wobble is in the two pieces of single-thickness plywood of the platform. You might glue and screw some oak ribs to reduce the flexure.

That just looks AWESOME!!! It's different and unique to you. BTW, one of those comments was probably mine, the one about the 1950's sci-fi movies.

If that street light in back of the garage has a photo eye you could just aim the scope at it and fire a flash gun into the eyepiece! That will shut it up for a while.

Ed D, You are correct that your entry was the winner... :-) I painted a rocket based on your quip.
The several suggestions I've had on the tall light over the garage crack me up...I think I'll just keep the switch off, though I think the canon and flash gun ideas are worth keeping in my back pocket. ;-)
"The Document" (Dave O's marvelous masterpiece with us contributing authors) has proven to be a best seller. If I have missed anybody who has requested it, please email me again at jack.swaton@starryhost.com. I think I've sent it out to all who have requested it.
Mike, I just checked the dates of Riverside and it follows the weekend of my youngest's school campout/star party. I MIGHT ACTUALLY MAKE IT THIS YEAR to Riverside. I've never ever been and I've lived 90 minutes away from it all of my life.
Ross, I'll look at your suggestion for the wobble, but tonight it kills me to say I have to go to bed now...clear sky and no moon and I'm pooped having spent the day in Los Angeles. :-(
All, I've passed your compliments on to the artists who did the flames, USA and Flags...my daughters beemed with pride. :-)

The altitude bearings are part of the black strip underneath the USA. They were actually cut out in the shape of Cassiopeia, however, the refractor covers one up nearly completely (you can just see part of the "W" poking out from behind the square refractor mount) and the other bearing is out of view of the camera. I used Teflon and Ebony Star. The bearings are from a 15" diameter circle (top half cut into the Cass "W").
By mounting the nearly 25lb refractor onto the alt bearing, I've balanced the scope without adding any length to the Newt OTA. :-)

Eyepiece? By the time you climb the ladder you are close enough that you don't even need one!
Joking of course. Yes, it is on the 'far side' ....
The first post of this thread shows an earlier revision of this scope and gives a good sense of its scale ... http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5506210
