I'm still in awe when I view Saturn or Jupiter but I've only been at this for one year and still have a great deal to see and learn

Jupiter, Mars, galaxies, and a thin moon. I've hardly scratched the surface of whats within reach of my scope though.

saturn is my first the why is kinda funny . The first time I saw it with my own eye in my scope was the morning of The Comeback, an NFL playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Oilers that was played January 3, 1993. Bills came back from being down 32 pionts and winning in overtime.(I'm a bills fan

) Jupiter has to be my next because I was able to observe the impact

Tough question, but thought provoking.

I guess I don't have a prevailing favorite set. Whatever I'm looking at on a given night is it for me. From the Moon to Carbon Stars, it's all good.

So much good stuff, but Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and the moon are way up there. But I can't discount nebula, galaxies, and clusters.

I need to get to dark skies!!

Saturn, Jupiter, The moon & OC's so far...( still waiting for my first galaxy and M42 with better Ep's than my first view last winter )...and same as Steve..I need to get to dark skies too..!!

2 of my favorite targets and moments came 3 months after buying my first scope (Orion XT10 Classic dob). I kept going up and down from my backyard (border white-red zone suburb) to the upstairs part of house to have a quick peak at Stellarium to memorize which route I had to take to star hop all the way to Uranus. It was a Very exciting moment and accomplishment for me as a pure newbie to Astronomy. I loved how that blue dot differentiated from the stars around it. Within a week I had done the same with Neptune. M13 was also a great first time sight as were Saturn, Jupiter and the Ring Nebula!

I can't wait to get another scope, with go to and tracking this time so I spend less time searching (even though I love star hopping, especially with Stellarium in night mode and on a laptop) and more time viewing objects.

My favorites have typically been double stars and clusters (open and globular). I've enjoyed these since getting interested in astronomy in the 70's...

I finally got a chance to view M81 & M82 in the EP a few nights ago and WOW. It wasn't even a real good seeing night. But, seeing the 2 in the same EP was really nice.

Also try M52 and the Bubble. Not as spectacular, but a nice observing challenge, and M52 is a good signpost for the Bubble. It's about the same FOV as M81/M82.

Jupiter is at the top of my list right now. I dig everything my scopes can show, but for the moment, I'm into dynamic objects that change frequently.

Conjunctions and random interesting alignments are a strong motivator to go outside. Planets moving through bright open clusters and well known asterisms are great for sketching. Jupiter was a degree or so below Davis' Dog's hind paw on Dec 16, looked pretty cool in a 4 degree field.

I happened to catch an unmanned cargo vessel following ISS late June 2011 while walking our dogs. If memory serves it was Progress M-11M. It's fascinating to think we're hurling these massive objects into NEO, and so few people on the ground notice it. I suppose that's my favourite thing... awareness of what's going on above us.

Got me thinking. Has anybody made a list of "views" of multiple objects? Format would include FOV, RA/Dec, object list, and maybe filter recommendation.

Globular clusters are MY favorite objects!!!! They are magnificent!!....and fun trying to 'wrap-my-head' around visualizing what one would see if standing on a planet from within it!!!
(NOTE: My primary interests are Lunar and Planetary observing!...but globulars are my best DSO's!).....
