You said it David. I could have spent some serious cash - if I had it. Still have this unknown repair bill hanging over my head. Once that is squared up I'm free to look ahead.

ASAE 2012 was alot of fun, well worth the drive.

Looking forward to 2013 now, hoping for an equally good speaker roster and maybe another IDA co-meeting.

Glad to see the dates now for more lead time to plan side trips or sightseeing.

This is very cool! I expect the location and the fact it is year 2 to make this an interesting event, indeed. If only I didn't have to sleep and could go to everything, stay up and observe, and just keep going all weekend.

It's a full moon that weekend, so observing is probably not going to be quite the 'pull' as it might be otherwise.

They did that last year. In the daylight.

Which begs the question; will they allow folks to linger in the dark hours?

It's not quite as bad as you might think- the low humidity makes light pollution less effective. The bigger problem will be the moon.

However, this reminds me- what if we had a sort of "Vendor star party?"

That's it exactly- and the other part is a chance to use what came. I kind of have the feeling these events are just a burden on vendors, regardless of what the return it. It would be nice to do something they could really have fun with, too.

Cool Alan, great speakers! How about Mike Brown (CalTech)? He's the guy who killed Pluto and discovered several dwarf planets, including Eris (Pluto's nemesis) and Sedna. He's an active prof at CalTech so his teaching schedule may get in the way. And he may be expensive - don't know. Just a thought.

I don't know if this is the right thread for posting suggestions. Hopefully Alan takes a look at it.

One of my favorite features in the past of the now dwindling RTMC was the Friday night show-and-tell sessions. There would be between 10 and 15 of these talks, and they all had a limit of something like 10 minutes. If enough amateur astronomers are attending ASAE, I wondered if an hour or two could be set aside for short presentations. I'd certainly be up for giving one, and it wouldn't be hard to convince others to do them as well.

Tom

And why is SBIG not listed here ??

They were missed at last year's event.

They went to NEAF !! And Arizona is a lot closer to California.

All those interested should contact SBIG and ask why (or is that Why Not ?? ). I will send an email off today !

He is a member here on CN, and is very pro-active in customer support.

He indicates that they do plan on attending this year...

Now to watch for their name to appear on the list !!

Looking for something amazing to do the night before the Expo?
We have setup a special program with the MT Lemmon Sky Center for Friday night for ASAE visitors to be hosted by world famous astrophotographer Mr Adam Block . Come and look thru their 32-inch Schulman Telescope, and visit the Catalina Sky Survey observatory. Adam will be your guide to the stars.....http://www.scienceandastronomy.com/mt-lemmon-special-skynights-program-with-adam-block/

Another reason not to miss ASAE this year! This just in from the University of Arizona Mirror Lab....http://mirrorlab.as.arizona.edu/

We will be happy to provide mirror lab tours on Thursday, November 14, Friday, November 15th and Monday, November 18th at 1 PM. ASAE rate will be $10 per person. This will be a great opportunity for them as the third of seven mirror casting for the Giant Magellan Telescope began August 24th and the mirror will be about ready to come out of the oven around this time!

Too bad it's not at 2PM. My flight arrives in Phoenix at 11:10AM, so there's no way I can make Tuscon by 1PM. And my flight out Monday is bright and early. Maybe they'll have tours at a different time. I'll have to check on that.

It is with great pleasure that ASAE announces the addition of keynote speaker Senior Editor and Planetary Evangelist Emily Lakdawalla of the Planetary Society.Emily Lakdawalla is a passionate advocate for the exploration of all of the worlds of our solar system. Through blogs, photos, videos, podcasts, print articles, Twitter, and any other medium she can put her hand to, Emily shares the adventure of space exploration with the world.

Emily holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in geology from Amherst College and a Master of Science degree in planetary geology from Brown University. She came to The Planetary Society in 2001 to oversee a portion of the Society's Red Rover Goes to Mars project, an education and public outreach program on the Mars Exploration Rover mission funded by LEGO. She has been writing and editing the Planetary Society Blog since 2005, reporting on space news, explaining planetary science, and sharing beautiful space photos. She appears weekly on the Society's Planetary Radio podcast, answering listener questions or rounding up the latest space news from the blog.

Emily has been an Administrator of the forum UnmannedSpaceflight.com since 2005, supporting a worldwide community of amateur space image processors. She is also a contributing editor to Sky & Telescope magazine and a frequent host of Cosmoquest Google+ Hangouts. Emily can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Tumblr, and wherever else she finds people who are equally passionate about space images.

They were last year, although there was some delay as the ticket sellers in the box office were not scheduled to arrive until the "official" starting time (ii AM IIRC), and there was a large crowd waiting to get in several hours earlier. But the Convention Center reacted well, and we were only delayed less than an hour as the management rounded up staff to handle the ticket sales and entry process.

As a former professor at the College of Optical Sciences and, later, a vendor for the lab, I have been in the mirror lab many times. If you want to see state of the art, big (really, really big) telescope mirror making in action, do not miss the mirror lab tour while you are in Tucson. The lab isn't that easy to get into so this is a great opportunity. They are doing some very cool stuff and the time it takes will be well worth it.
John

Hey Jim...the reason I asked is because I went to the link provided above, but couldn't find the tickets. However, I just checked again and I see that they will be available Tuesday. The information was probably there, but I missed it the first go 'round. See ya' in about a month!

Thanks again to everyone who made SWAP 2013 a sweeping success! Based on our polling, we'll endeavor to make SWAP 2014 even better!

On a related note, I'd like to clear the air on something. Two SWAP attendees misinterpreted my presentation comments regarding Cloudy Nights. For the record- I am a major fan of CN! Not only do I enjoy the camaraderie of the forums, but I am grateful to CN and Astronomics for the freedom as vendors to promote our businesses and events such as this- CN is good for astronomy!

What I intended to, and believe I said in my talk was that while any forum can be a fabulous and free source of information, one must use discernment with regard to member-provided tutorials involving the complexities of specific software. This had nothing to do Cloudy Nights itself, nor do I feel I was defensive. If passion came off that way, I apologize. I value correctness. The power of the internet is such that anyone can post documentation and procedures with authority, while failing to do any bona fide research. I don't like seeing folks led astray by misinformation. It spreads quickly and is hard to undo. For my part, I endeavor to get things correct before I share them. Like many CN forum members however, I've picked up many good tips from guys in the know.

Thanks for letting me have that say, I appreciate it!
