I thought the alignment of the two moons and the star was really beautiful, especially with the red of the star contrasting the bluish white of the moons. I observed this one for about 3.5 hours, taking time out for dinner and a few short breaks. At 320x I could tell it was a double but no split. Right now there is a front passing through and conditions aren't optimal. It was really neat to see Jupiter with a 'fifth moon' last night. The sum of a series of small observing errors on my part, as well as having an eye exam late in the afternoon, led me to believe I was tracking a fast moving asteroid the first night. So perhaps my impressions may be of some interest. They can be found here http://alpo-j.asahikawa-med.ac.jp/kk13/j130104z.htm (you will need to scroll right to the bottom!) which includes a routine drawing of Jupiter, and because of the very good conditions also includes details seen on the Galileans. With regard to the scale drawing of the satellites and BU 87 this is in relation to the stars’ separation, the stars themselves necessarily enlarged (about 6x in actuality!). Some of my observing setup etc is shown here http://alpo-j.asahikawa-med.ac.jp/kk12/c121213z.htm After checking on Sky Map Pro 11 I see that Jupiter passes through the field of R Gem in 2014 early January. After checking this star out on the AAVSO site it should be near maximum then as now – period 369.91; tho’ possibly fainter than mag. 7. With a B-V colour index of +2.2 it should be pretty much redder than BU 87; I plan to check this out at next opportunity. This is also double but the secondary fainter than mag. 12. I love the addition of various stars when they are that close to planets in the eyepiece. Funny that you thought it was an asteroid initially. I can see myself conjuring the same thoughts. I agree with others that your color representations are quite enjoyable.
