I love how fast I can set up my solid tube xt12i, but the shaky, stiction plagued base was never a favorite of mine. I had toyed with the idea of re-building the base, but was always worried about messing up the dsc's. Well, I took the plunge, and have finally finished:
Stability and movement are much improved, and the dsc system works as well as it always did. I've got a more detailed thread here in the ATM forum, but I wanted to post about it here, just in case some people with Intelliscopes were curious about improving the base, and don't regularly visit the ATM forum.

I'm impressed, nice! Eventually, when the original particle board base begins to wear out too much, more of us may need to build a replacment along the lines you did.

Skookum!
I rebuilt my own base too using baltic birch and enjoy how much lighter it is than particle board. Particle board is a bad invention.

Thanks all - it was a lot of fun to do. For anyone who is on the fence about any type of atm project, I highly suggest looking around in the atm forum. There are some amazing projects over there, and lots of people with great talent who are willing to offer helpful advice.

That is a beautiful upgrade. I do not own a reflector (yet). I have been looking at the Orion 12 truss tube Intelliscope for quite a while. I am not a fan of particle board, especially for a base that will sit outside. You have given me some good ideas. I will be sure to check out your thread in ATM. Thanks for beautiful photo.

nice job.
all the orion dobs need bearing surface upgrades. i can tell you a sure fire way to fix them on a non intelliscope but i hear you on not messing up the intelliscope DSC's they will complicate things a bit for sure.

Neat job. I might consider this for my dob base someday.
I wonder if one could substitute good quality 1/2 inch plywood for 3/4, even if just for the vertical sections. It would certainly help reduce the weight if it was "stiff" enough. Just a thought.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.
I'm not sure if 1/2" ply would be stiff enough. The thing that was nice about using the 3/4" was that the original base pieces were also 3/4", so the measurements transferred over nicely. I could see it working if you included some extra supports or braces in key areas.
