Eyepiece box on EBay. Up to $8.50 with six bids and four days to go!
So how much would you pay for an eyepiece box? Well, this isn't just ANY eyepiece box, of course. It belongs to the coveted Meade Research Grade series of vintage oculars. The eyepieces themselves without boxes can command very high prices at auctions. Good luck if you're bidding on this one!

Is the RG 20mm Meade WA a collector item ? That is the question. If yes having the box may increase the value of both. An empty green box for the Nagler 11mm T1 was sold 50$ on Ebay !

And it's got the slightly oversized "0" in the 20mm -- a rare variant indeed!
I'd say it's worth at least $9.00, but the box market is hot so it might hit $9.25.

We've recieved your complaint. Unfortunatly we cannot respond at this time as we are busy seeing stuff with exceptional clarity.
Besides it's well known that only Televue owners suffer from box-itus.

I have found that they work best without the boxes. Jim B. may disagree given he likes to observe with end caps in place. IMO though, best without the box. Same with the RGs.

I offered $50 for a Pentax Ortho box once (I'm missing one box for my set) and the other guy turned me down. I recently sold a full set of Meade RGs (Orthos and Wide Angles) with all boxes for $1700. I doubt I would have made that much had they lacked the boxes. Clearly there is market value for out of production eyepiece boxes.

Vintage clouds are extremely rare and hard to find. You're lucky indeed if you ever find one NIB or NOS. I once saw a box of vintage clouds sell for over $1000 on EBay! (Buyer was from a drought stricken region in Southern California.) You really have to be careful with vintage clouds though, you just never know where they come from. They could be left over from a tornado or hurricane or something.

Now that my 34mm ES 68 is just about to be delivered, I thought that the vintage clouds would re-appear tonight, but it isn't so! I will get to use my new 34mm ES with the vintage clouds elsewhere !!!!
Since I just turned 50, I consider myself vintage as well now.

The vintage clouds could be an issue. i was planning on buying some off ebay some time ago to go with a vintage Zeiss Telementor then I noticed the seller was from Chernobyl so I dropped out.
You have to watch yourself on ebay. You think your getting a bargain but sellers arent always honest about stuff like clouds.

And I heard somewhere (on this forum perhaps?) that WWII-era vintage clouds may be radioactive. I wouldn't want to touch that!

The seller also has a vintage Meade box that comes *with* an eyepiece, though the box is stained, and a previous owner wrote on this Meade RG Ortho 7mm with a felt-tip marker. It seems hard to tell how well this eyepiece would clean up. I actually have one of these, and would like another, but I think I'll pass on this one.
And not in the least because of the stained box! Oh the humanity!

You'll be lucky if it brings anything, This thread is all hype over boxes. The only thing eyepiece boxes bring is a tad higher resale value on any eyepiece as people seem to like the boxes. Personally I could care less if it comes in a box as long as the EP is in excellent condition.

So, does the box live up to it's $40.95 cost? Any scratches, scrapes, pencil marks??? And just how does one rate boxes? Obviously LNIB doesn't work....

Wasn't me (but then i have all my boxes except for one, which didn't come with one). How does one rate boxes? Obviously, LNIB doesn't apply (maybe LNB). Does a price sticker increase/decrease the value? What if an eyepiece is included? How does one determine if a box says XX eyepiece that it is the orginal version box or a later run? Is a box signed by Al Nagler worth more than an unsigned one, worth less, or just worthless? How many and what kind of scratches, scrapes, and dings affect the price, and how do they affect it. Then there's the question of what do we do with all those Brandon boxes..........

See Hernando, I told you that box was worth $45. It's like you got your 7mm ortho in it for free!
As for the poster with the Meade 5000 series box, I can't believe that it's that rare... but maybe it's just that thought that makes everybody else throw theirs away. Best to secure it in an archival-quality plastic bag, add some desiccant, and store it in the safe deposit box next to the mint-state Saints.

Careful, demand is so high and these Brandon baggies are so rare and valuable that many fakes exist. The only way to be sure it's genuine is to have it checked for Don's fingerprints. And even then it could be from his tuna sandwich.

I recently sold a Meade SWA 5000 34mm eyepiece but I couldn't find the original box. No problem with this from the buyer, btw. After reading this thread, I'm keeping the box. Who knows what it will bring a few years from now.
Rare breed - Meade Series 5000 SWA 34mm BOX (complete with even rarer white box outer cover [I even have the same box sets with its siblings 16,20,24,28,40mm's for a complete series 5K box sets of 6], it can't get better than this! )

True, but maybe allow some slack, whatever floats one's boat as they say, and some meticulous collectors might tend to bat for completeness, and that an EP may not be considered as such without its original box in possession. The premium price bidded for the box in this thread is indicative of such possibility.
Best,

Tend to agree, to each his own...all hobbies/endeavours have "collectors items" or "antiques", and the more LNIB an item is, the more its worth. And I'm as guilty as the next person. All of my eyepieces (except the 13mmT1) have the original boxes (wife really doesn't understand my insistence on keeping the boxes). If I hadn't run into this LNIB stuff before, I'd probably have thrown them all out. Also kept the original boxes from the refractor, put them in the garage rafters in case I ever need them (didn't keep the Dob Boxes and probably should have. But yea, you're right, to collectors the more perfect to new it is, the better.

On the other hand, perhaps folks dissing the box buyer are *not* folks from whom to buy used eyepieces. I mean, if you can't even manage to keep the original packaging together with the item, how well taken care of are the eyepieces likely to be?

Last year I bought a used 31mm Nagler that did not have the box, but the eyepiece arrived in almost brand new condition. But, like you, I don't understand the lack of a box. Why on earth would you get rid of a perfectly good eyepiece box?

Agree. I kept all boxes of my EP including the solid ES 100° and 30mm 82° boxes. When I will sell those ep, and it will happen one day, it will be handy to have those boxes to ship them safely.

I keep almost all boxes. I've still got the original boxes my Sansui speakers shipped in from the 'B3 annex exchange' Subic Bay Phillipines in about 1972. When I move (about 6 times so far) the speakers go back in. Over the years I've disposed of many 'used up' appliances/electronics in their original boxes. Yes, I have all my eyepiece boxes.

I'm pretty much the same. I have two large cardboard moving boxes in the garage that are full of empty eyepiece boxes, just in case I sell anything. In fact, the only eyepieces I don't have boxes for are those that I bought used that came without the boxes.

I think the interesting thing about RGO box going for $45 is, with a bit of patience, one could find the actual eyepiece with box for maybe $20-$30 more. So the box is worth more than the eyepiece.

Perhaps true… but our man has made ebay history. That's not just any RG 20mm WA box now.
If I were in his lucky shoes, I'd have something worthy to put in my sig.

Until recently, I kept most of my ep's in bolt cases inside and the respective boxes separate in an outside shed. I just bought a couple of new TV eps/boxes and thought I should just put everything back in their boxes before the mice got to 'em or lost in the clutter. And to my delight, everything I use for a nights viewing fits perfectly with a little room to spare, even when in their boxes. The other ep's and accesories that were in the case (as pictured), I just never used and the case became too cluttered and store those separate now (I also didn't want those cheapie ep's near my TV's. Just not right ). Anyway, I'm glad for the person who won that box. If I had the money, I could see myself bidding high on something like that if I wanted it....... How many times did I just type the word 'box(es)' ?!

Hey I just received delivery of a nice vintage Meade eyepiece box I won on EBay for $45. One side has the outer blue layer ripped off, but it has the original OR6 Made In Japan sticker and the original price sticker ($27.95!) As an added bonus it came with a 6mm Ortho eyepiece. If I take good care of it, that box will last me for many years to come.

Your logic is flawed. Many, many things are worth more when "parted out" than when sold whole. How much does the EP alone sell for? I don't know as I've never looked at what they cost but it probably isn't less than what was paid for the box...

Pff... That box has terrible Field Curvature, limited FOV and no Eye Relief to talk about. Not worth the 99 cents...

Agreed, for box perfection you need an XW box which is sharp to rhe edge

Orthos? Ortho boxes are small, will they command a bigger price? They are sharp to the edge....

Hey I kept my Sansui speaker boxes also from a store in Troy Ohio outside of Dayton purchased back in 1976. If I ever buy eyepieces new I always keep the boxes.
