Another C/2012 K5 Sketch new
      #5609400 - 01/06/13 10:52 PM Attachment (26 downloads)

Observed Comet Linear C/2012 K5 tonight with my 12" dob. Saw it back in December with my 120ST refractor so I was glad I finally viewed it with my bigger scope.

The comet was easily located between the extended "V" shape caused by the Haydes cluster in Taurus. The comet was passing the yellowish 6.18 mag. star HIP23589 just south of Iota Tauri. The soft glow of a fan shaped tail followed a small brighter nucleus surrounded by a faint coma as the comet moved along. Watching it pass by HIP23589 was a nice sight indeed!

Sketch showes position about 7:45pm. Movement was to the left requiring about an hour to move about the same distance on the other side of the star.

I can only say the same.
Very nice sketch !
But K5 change his face from December to January.
The tail looks from an other angle now rounder.

Bye Christian

Great sketch! Did you observe from a dark sky? And please, can you chase the clouds in Belgium for me...

Very nice sketch and thank you for posting it. Maybe on our next dark sky outing I can get to see it through my scope.

Thanks for all the replies. Your comments are most appreciated.

Christian, Jeff de Wit; the comets tail was a little thinner and more subtle than in the sketch. I was not sure it would show up after scanning so it is a little darker than what I saw. Also I wish I could show the delicate yellow/orangish color of the K3 star the comet passed. My skies are light polluted, about 4.5 mag faintest naked eye star seen.

Jeff de Wit; hope your clouds go away soon. It's going to cloud up here and rain the next couple days so I'm getting ready to feel your pain.

Clear skies
