criterion dynamax 1960 8 inch sct new
      #5607946 - 01/06/13 09:28 AM

several months ago i purchased a 1960 criterion dynamax 8 inch vintage sct.after fixing the drive, cleaning the corrector, and mirrors.i was happy to find that this ota had outstanding optics.far better than any of the celestron or meade sct that i have owned over the years.the plan was to restor, then sell, but after takeing it out for a spin of the night sky.i was blown away buy its veiws.it has become my primery scope of choice.stars are perfict pin points, with outstanding contrast, across the field.it has the bakerlite tube.the only problem i found with it is you have to wait a little longer for cool down time.I find that this scope is a real vintage gem.

Can you post some pictures. I didn't think Criterion got into the SCT business till the early 1970's. I don't think Celestron was making a commercial sct in 1960 till Johnson perfected mass producing the corrector plates . Bob

Interesting! Good to hear there are some good Dynamaxes out there.

I'm guessing around 1973/74 as the year for your 'scope. I've seen an old Astromart ad for a D8 with SN 1008 which I think was a 1971 model and the next SN i know of is 2480 for a 1976 model. Mine, a 1980 model, has SN 4268.

Out of interest, what is the serial number shown on the ring retaining the corrector plate?

James

I have had a couple good Dynamax 8's and 1 Dog
I now own an EX Dynamax DX6 6" Those were the good ones, I have yet to see a bad one, even the B&L 6" SCT's I have looked through were good.
Fred Pauli still has 2 NOS B&L 6" SCT scopes, one is a 220V Euro. version ut he wants about $400.00 for them each.
My DX6 performs right up to my Celestron C6 SCT in every way except brightness. I have thought about sending the mirrors in for enhanced coatings as I will never sell it.
But your scope was not made untill the 70's,
In 1960 all Criterion made was the Dynascope Newtonian series of miiored telescopes.
There is a good article on the web called a myopic view of the Criterion Mfg company, pretty informative.

Made in 1971.

Mine's a 1978 and (after some work...) has good optics.

Every body has swallowed the notion that every Dynamax was bad, tho they had more under performing scopes than other companys they did make some decent scopes, especially those sent to Educational destinations. They hand picked those.
People that complained/returned them had them referenced to an index card cab. that had notes on the performance of every SN. it was either reworked or replaced with hand picked scopes.

Yep, I would go for 1971 based on the ring number. The strange thing is that the base SN, 1960, is so much higher than the base SN of 1008 that i have seen for a D8 that was advertised on Astromart which had a similar ring number, 710039.

According to the Company 7 website the D8 was introduced in August 1971 so that would make spinyeal's one an early one - I wonder if it had the earlier style declination slowmo with a short tangent arm enclosed in a box rather than the longer C8 style tangent arm that is on the later ones?

I was given a DX8 a couple of years ago. I had to work on the corrector but now it gives far better images. In the end I gave up making a VFO/transformer to convert from US 60 Hz 110V to use UK 240V 50Hz and de-forked it. It now sits on an old SP mount and performs well.
