I wonder about the wind too, but I figure there aren't any flat surfaces so hopefully I'm safe!

Stephan,
That is a perfect example of a Flip Top Observatory!
How about posting your construction steps for others.

Of course! It's a 6' by 6' platform, 6' high made of 2 by 4 lumber and 1/4" plywood. There are holes in the floor so the tripod legs can go through so the scope won't move when I'm inside. Everything is control via a laptop inside the observatory.
You will find more pictures and plans at ...

That's a very interesting idea for an observatory roof opening - I'm in the process of designing an observatory right now and that's really piqued my interest. thanks so much for posting Stephen

Stephan that is exquisite! Doesn't look too complicated or expensive so I might just give it a go!

WOW - I happen to own that exact same building. It's on our back deck and it holds mostly lawn chairs. And now that I've seen what you have done with it - our lawn chairs may be looking for a new home!

Thanks Bob. Let me know if you need to know where to get the parts such as the machine skates and the track rails if you want to mirror the build. Hint, Northern Tool and Lowes is your friend.

I built mine in 2007, treated pine and exterior plywood, roll-off roof. I wouldn't use plywood again for the exterior, or at least not cheap stuff anyway.... outer ply has degraded somewhat, has remained structural, but a little unsightly, and in need of a repaint..... I replaced the hinged end-flap with a 4mm thick rubber strip recently, as the ply was rotting.
You can have a look at a webpage I made back then for construction pics if you like. http://astro.astrodog.eml.cc/obs/observatory.html
