Is there an upgrade for the XT8 crayford that will make it 10:1? I've seen the upgrade for "GSO" focusers, can they be used on the XT8? Or is it time to shop for a new focuser?

Please allow me to share my experience with you:

I had to upgrade focusers because I started out with the old 2 inch rack and pinion. If I had started out with the 2 inch Crayford, I would have stuck with that. At f/6 you really don't need a 2 speed focuser. I got a 2 speed Moonlite because I figured that I could repurpose it later on if I were to get a larger and faster scope.
Assuming that you are determined to get a 2 speed focuser, the GSO's aren't bad but the Moonlites are far superior. I would avoid the Orion 2 speed focuser.

So basically I would have to buy a new focuser? Sounds like I can't modify the existing stock focuser.

I do not think the GSO kit will work on the Orion focusers.
If you are trying to get a finer focus adjustment, you could put a larger knob on yours. Or you can make one of your knobs larger by putting a piece of rubber hose over the knob or a piece of Styrofoam or a Styrofoam cup.
I picked up a like new - used Orion dual speed low profile for a reasonable price. I am using it to replace the 1.25" rack & pinion on my Orion 8" Skyview Pro. Just keep an eye on Astromart and the Cloudynights Swap & Shop and Classifieds sections.

The simplest upgrade is to get Orion's electric motor add-on for the focuser. You can use the included hand controller and with Shoestring's adapter, control it from your computer. The motor is an analog device, without absolute positioning. This will usually not allow automated focusing from your computer.
