Here are 40 panels put together they spanned from 11:45 to 11:59UT no clouds but I managed to make it look like there were plenty but we have to start some where. You have to either try to subtract a flat or use Gradient Xterminator to even out the light intensity across your pieces so the seams become uniform and less noticeable. I wish I could have got this with my PST but I was using my triple-stacked very early Solarmax 90 telescope here at 1.6m focal length. I have a few ideas on how to improve it as I believe my capture data was sound and at the moment I just lack the experience at merging photos. One idea I have, is to generate some brighter images of the dark patches and over lay them and then use the eraser tool at different percentages to try to blend them in better - a bit like making a sculpture? I will keep you all informed of my progress on this new journey. Regards Andy PS I had to shrink the image size by 30% to get the file size under 2mb to fit on my website. From what I have seen triple stacking offers only a marginal improvement in contrast, and tweaking a triple stack filter system seems like it could be a real chore. You therefore might want to try using your two front etalons on another scope - this might help give you better contrast uniformity, which will really help in mosaics at the frame boundaries. A little shorter focal length (or a larger sensor) will decrease the number of images needed to be stitched together, and I don’t think this would significantly impact the resolution/detail. You could use a focal reducer, but in my experience these seem to decrease the detail of a mosaic. You use also a very good equipment for that image. To create a full sun mosaik is very difficult. The gradients will kill you! I tried it a few month ago with nearly the same number of pics... I played a little bit with your original pic from your homepage in PhotoShop. There are very much details in your picture! (I hope, it is ok to work with your pic. If not, tell me and I will delete it immediately) Working with a colored JPG is not pretty good, but it show the potential in your awesome image. It would be a long post to explain it in detail, but I can write the rough steps of my image processing: It´s important to work with b/w pics, because its much easier as with colored pics. If you have only colored pics, it would be easier to process each color channel for itself. 1. Put the images together (with PS layers). Take care for image details to prevent doubling it, and it would be good, if you have a 50% overlap in each image. So you can terminate regions of bad seeing... 2. Smooth the overlap of each image to an other. Choose the softest overlap, which is possible without get white parts in the picture (using masks in PS)... 3. After reducing to one background layer, select the solar surface with a smooth selection (without the spicules and prominences) and process it separate. 4. Flatfielding from the solar surface with artificial flats. With hard gradients, you must do that 3-4 times. Than you have a homogen bright image, but you also have terminated the natural solar limb darkening. 5. Create the solar limb darkening. The easiest way is to double the solar surface layer and use Gradient Xterminator. Than use layer transparency to adjust it by taste or like the original image. 6. Than combine the surface Image with the separate adjusted prominence image (adjust with levels and curves). After combining, use a high pass filter to sharpen the image by taste. 7. Color the image by taste. I hope, that would answer your question a bit, because the real image processing train is much more voluminous... @Andy, cool animation. It seems, you have luck with your weather at home. Here in Germany it´s cloudy since weeks and if it´s clear, I´ve terrible seeing. So, please show us more of your detailed pics!
