Meade 6600 reflector and a wierd focuser!
      #5613635 - 01/09/13 12:28 PM

Found this locally and bought it, the focuser does not look original, not sure what the the tubes are for. Seems this is a 1.25 focuser, says japan on it. The R/P came off one of the steel tubes. Need to find screws for it, is this worth anything? There look to be some tapped holes near the focuser that don't do anything. I don't see a finder scope.

Heres the focuser that the smaller focuser fit into, is this one the original?

Is the focuser attached to the scope a helical type?

Yep, that's a helical focuser. Looks like one that Lumicon offered back in the '80's.
No, it is not original. It had a lower profile rack and pinion.

Can the helical focuser work by itself? thanks for responding.

I'm assuming your are talking about a remote focuser being attached to it? If so, no.
A helical is operated by twisting the locked eyepiece clockwise or counterclockwise to achieve focus.
Most people who owned helicals bought them because they were the only ultra low profile focuser offered at that time.
They are great for fine focusing.
But in my opinion, they are more of a pain than a pleasure to use.

oh no I mean from the photo will it work by just twisting the helical part? does it look like its missing anything?

To achieve focus does it look like its missing anything, Seems like a 2 inch eye piece could fit. Do you or anyone else know of an aftermarket focuser for this scope?

It's possibly just missing a 2" to 1 1/4" adapter for 1 1/4" eyepieces. You need to determine where the focus point is but the only reason I can think of for the use of the other focuser (it's off a refractor) using the tubes is so the owner could focus on objects very close.

Dave

Edit: On second look it appears the adapter is there.

Looks complete to me.
Throw an eyepiece in and have fun with that little scope!!!

It looks to me like someone replaced the original rack and pinion with a helical focuser and then modified some sort of small refractor focuser so it fit the helical focuser. The stock focusers on older scopes like yours tend to be quite tall so that scheme may work.

Have you tried it with an eyepiece to see if it comes to focus?

Jon

No not yet, cloudy as usual here in Portland area. Yea that's the way I found it with the refractor focuser in the helical focuser. The 2 inch adapter was in a box with the eyepieces.

Im sure this reflector needs to be collaminated or however you say it. I had to tighten the screws in the back cause the back of the scope was rattling.

I'm guessing the former owner used the modifed refractor focuser for "rough" focus and then achieved fine focus using the helical focuser.

I have that same low-profile Lumicon 2" helical focuser on a 6" f/10 reflector I built. It looks like the previous owner replaced the stock 1.25" Meade focuser with the 2" helical one ... possibly to get a camera to reach focus for astrophtography. He then rigged up a standard 1.25" refractor focuser to fit into the 2" helical focuser so the scope could be used with a 1.25" eyepiece.

The big problem with this particular 2" helical focuser was it became very loose and "wobbly" when screwed out too far ... hence the need for fitting another focuser inside it and then leaving the helical focuser screwed in all the way. Actually a rather clever solution by the previous owner.

This is what I have been told in private mail by several people. I actually took the scope out tonight without the smaller refractor focuser inserted. I used a 1.25 inch adapter out of my 2 inch focuser in my SV105T and was not able to reach focus unless I pulled the eyepiece out 4 inches or so from the holder. So that's what happened. The extension tubes were not really used. But I did grab one and jam it in the 1.25 inch hole and inserted an eyepiece. Focused Jupiter and cloudbelts pretty good. Helical focuser way wobbly when unscrewed just like you said think collimation is in order. I hope that's not hard since I never done it before. The mount is superb on this unit. Old Mizar mount as smooth and stable as my vixen GP and better in some respects. Its really well made.

I paid only $100 for this. I think I'll keep it for awhile!

Where can a good 2" aftermarket focuser be bought?

Crawmach makes some nice focusers. But they cost more than the entire scope.
